I must have missed the thread, but good for you.

That's how you survive--you hold on to your convictions and through grit, you manifest your own opportunities.

Life is brutal, its survival or rot; there are no handouts, only hard stops. But thats when you need to rely on yourself to dig deep and keep going. To keep going, to keep pushing, to keep getting better and stronger. That's the only way and response that will work.

I hope you keep that fire burning, it'll be what keeps you from going cold.

Good on you man!

My oldest friend (since kindergarten) always went hard when he partied but was never a destructive drunk. He married a woman who hardly drank and tried to reel in his drinking so he started lying/being sneaky with his drinking. They divorced but we weren't convinced he was a legit alcoholic. Within a year his tendencies went overboard (drinking alone, benders that put him in the hospital) but only his parents knew how bad it was until another year after that when they asked us for help one time when he was in need of going to the hospital but resisted. He would only work two jobs a year (2-3 months each, usually 6 on 1 off) and aside from keeping himself sober for work, he was never able to stay sober longer than about 2 weeks for the next ~2 years (only ever drinking alone). He must've had about 30 hospital visits during those 3 years.

It was getting to the point that we were expecting a call within the next few months that he drank himself to death but one day a switch went off after he spent a week in a detox facility (never went to a full rehab facility just that one week there).
He took 6 months off work and concentrated on his sobriety, just eating decent and working out and he's doing amazing. Best he's been since his brother passed away 13yrs ago. Got a girlfriend a month or two ago and ended a 3.5yr dryspell.

While I can't relate to addiction firsthand, seeing my friend turn things around makes me think there's hope for all of those struggling.

I've been drinking on and off daily for years. Like heavy drinking, atleast half a bottle of vodka a day. But mostly been sober since this year.

But never really hit bottom. Decided to quit cause it quit being fun, the euphoria went away, instead I just felt like chit all the time, wasn't worth it

Addiction is weird, it warps your whole world view and time just flies when you're chitfaced. The last 5yrs seems like a blur. I didn't want to spend my 30's like that too so thought it was a good time to reel it in

Also half my uncles died from alcoholism and its a chitty way to go

I always think this after a really bad hangover. Then I go back to drinking usually a week later.

I've had a 6 or 7 hangovers in the last ~2.5 years that have made me question drinking.
The mental/emotional toll of a hangover where you are rotting alone all day (ie not going for hungover brunch or w/e with friends) and feel physically unwell enough to do anything productive has only become an issue in the last few years, & while I've been single.
