Not all 3rd world countries are worth visiting, but it’s usually much cheaper and waaaaay more fun than 1st world countries. Always more shenanigans going on.

Cheaper. And for Westerners, I guess it has a certain exotic appeal and to brag to friends they've been to such countries.

Anecdotal evidence is worthless. Tourists dying makes the news precisely because it's rare. If you followed OP's reasoning you would end up thinking ghettos in American cities are safe. The violence there is so regular that you never hear about it.
