I can understand being obsessed with yourself in your early 20s. You're still hearing "you are the future" from everyone around you.

The future has arrived for this guy. No family. No kids, and still obsessed with himself.

Guy needs someone to love more than himself.
The closer we approach the uncertainty of life's ending the more we wish to trade all of the things we have acquired in exchange for all of the things we have lost: wealth for youth, knowledge for fresh curiosity, resignation for hope.
