Alpha grandfather story…

I remember driving with my grandfather. He stormed Normandy and was in the battle of the bulge and was pretty much shell shocked for a long ass time.

We were downtown were I live and a golden bull pulled up and asked him for directions. I watched him turn beat read and look at the guy. He proceeded to tell him you didn’t struggle finding phucking Pearl Harbor did you? Asian Bert stared and ran away. One of my fondest childhood memories

That generation, they grew up during the great depression only to get drafted into a war where we were not the one's with the advantage and they won that and came home and built the country into what it is today. Kind of cold and matter of fact type people. Not like the chit talking ranblers that re baby-boomers.

Your grandfather was a hell of a man. My grandfather was also in the Battle of the Bulge except he came up from North Africa, through Italy and Austria into Germany in the 9th armored division, Patton's army. Ironically in his career he worked with Germans and Japanese a lot.

My grandpa was in WWII as well he was a plane mechanic in the army air corps. He wanted to fly so bad but he had a color blindness issue with the color green so he couldn't. Came home from the war and became an engineer and built bridges all around the Midwest. When I was a kid he drove a Cadillac with leather seats and smoked Marlboros into his 70's. Died of emphysema which wasn't pretty to watch but I don't think he ever complained about it, he knew it was just part of the game.

I wonder how much being under so much stress as war impacts your body, like test levels and stuff. I can see on myself when I go trough "stressful" times how when its over I feel different.

I had a lot of family in WWII and when they got back to the US they didn't blame Asians and Germans, etc who had nothing to do with the war.

Let me tell you a story that's similar to your's OP. I was eight years old and running with a dime in my hand. Into the bus stop to pick up a paper for my old man. I'd sit on his lap in that big old Buick and steer as we drove through town. He'd tousle my hair and say "Son, take a good look around

My Great Uncle Freddie didn't arrive in Normandy until June 7th, the day after the landing.

He was with 12th SS Panzer Division Hitlerjugend.

He surrendered to US troops in Austria in May of 1945.

He ended up in the US working as an engineer and was really into stamp collecting.
