Most people donโ€™t eat anywhere near enough potassium, that is the issue, not the salt. Anytime anyone says to lower the salt they should leave that alone and realize they gotta simply raise potassium. Those two work together in specific ratio.

Salt enhances flavor. It's an essential ingredient. Just make meals from scratch and don't buy prepackaged processed cancerous american dogschit and you'll be fine.

It was literally a form of payment at one time.
Being so valuable, soldiers in the Roman army were sometimes paid with salt instead of money. Their monthly allowance was called "salarium" ("sal" being the Latin word for salt). This Latin root can be recognized in the French word "salaire" โ€” and it eventually made it into the English language as the word "salary."

Of course it is possible to get too much salt just like you can get too much of anything, even water. Personally I'm fine with better labels all around, but to hell with adjusting food at large institutions to fit the needs of an 80 year old granny in heart failure.

you can't cope with limiting salt/sodium in food by default?

Americans definitely eat far too much salt, but goddamn life is bad without any spices. I recently was staying in a beach bungalow in the Philippines and had bad diarrhea, and there was literally no way to replenish the electrolytes in my body because there werenโ€™t enough sources around. The only thing they had was sugar, which was in everything and I absolutely hate. Felt absolutely terrible for like 5 days, and never want to go through that again.

I read somewhere, but it could have easily been internet fodder, that the salt increases bloop pressure theory has never been shown in humans in a scientific study and the original study that salt will increase bp was done on rats and they were fed more salt than a human could possibly ingest unintentionally

improved labeling = excellent

mandating sodium content by fiat = NO

I would love better food labels. Heck I've even proposed them before [might have been on misc].

At least in the US most people don't think in mg/g when it comes to food. We think of teaspoons. So have little shapes on the front of packaged food with EASY TO READ numbers.

salt shaker = teaspoons of salt in this package

sugar bowl = teaspoons of added sugar in this package

Want people to be able to make better choices? Don't make them squint at tiny print on the back of a package and try to figure out serving size/grams/milligrams.

If there are two boxes of crackers you should be able to easily tell which one has more salt or more sugar if that matters to you.

Some foods are supposed to have more salt in them. Should pickles and olives have a maximum salt threshold? Or should we allow people to exercise some independent thought and just not eat a crapload of pickles if they need a low salt diet?

From what I understand Sodium isn't bad, it's obesity that's the problem. If you're active sodium does nothing.

Yep it's a very important electrolyte. You will die on no sodium. That's why people on the Keto diet drink ketoaid.

So many years back i had a health issue and after counting up my sodium intake and never ever adding sodium to anything, i was well over 10,000.
Even a freakin bagel has 300mg.
I think what they are saying is for companies to keep it low and we have to add it ourselves, which is 5 seconds of effort.

I get it, however I think this is *generally* a better take for sugar.

Maybe a misc chef will chime in, but I believe that when salt is used in the cooking process makes a difference and it is also part of the chemical reaction when baking.

Truth, it is and no one is saying "ban" it but the levels in everyday products is WAY HIGHER than you would expect.
Take this for example, if you fry anything there are tasty pre made seasoning/flour packages by major spice companies in the spice section of the grocery store.
I decided to buy one and looked at the number of milligrams for this small package and was shocked at what i found.
The bag had 18 servings at 1700mg of sodium per serving for a total of 30,600 milligrams to fry something.

I totally agree that a lot of packaged foods have unreasonably high levels of salt. I'm just saying educate the public and let the market sort it out.

I think a lot of it is ignorance because the information isn't easy to see and presented in a clear way. Who is going to add up the mg of salt for every food they eat? Most people can't even track their caloric intake.
2,300 mg

Consider that 1 teaspoon of table salt, which is a combination of sodium and chloride, has 2,325 milligrams (mg) of sodium. That's slightly more than the daily limit of 2,300 mg recommended by health experts.
So one serving would be 3/4 of a teaspoon of salt, or the whole package would be over 13 teaspoons of salt. Put a salt shaker symbol with 13 on the front or if you want to do it by serving .75. A consumer can pick the product with a lower number if one is available.

If you tell people that a teaspoon of salt a day to maybe two for really active people who sweat a lot is reasonable and they see foods that have 1 teaspoon or more that is easy math- this product has an entire days worth of salt in a single serving.
