I have encountered this at work.

My view is that the males believes in "toxic masculinity" which is something like a "real man" has no feelings, doesn't give a f@ck, has no feminine interests, etc and so the male is an "all or nothing thinker". That means if they aren't "all man" at level "100 male" then they are a bitch.

So, Gary thinks this way and he's sitting in his truck and it's not "stick shift" so he's like a "bitch for not driving stick". He remarks that his pants are soft and comfortable so that's what a bitch thinks. He sees another guy and thinks he's handsome, so he must be a ****git. He wishes he knew how to sing like the guy on the radio, so he must be a ****git.

I have met these types before and they are always Army Rangers, star football players, etc and they say that they "tried being a man" and they still didn't feel like a man. Meanwhile, being an Army ranger isn't "manly" any more than being an artist or a car salesman is manly.

So, they have mental problems related to thinking in stereotypes and that causes them to deny they are a man and conclude they are a woman and a failure as a man.

I think in order to achieve that level of physical fitness, you most likely have some underlying mental disorders: obsessive compulsive, image dismorphia, narcisim, etc. The kind of mental illness that you could live a perfectly normal, healthy, successful life with. Though there' always that chance the mental illness can take over and send you down a path like this

Also wouldn't be surprised if the hyper masucline image he was formerly projecting was simply him overcompensation for serious insecurities
