Also if you look at polling data in eastern ukraine, again with the exveption being the donbas, they have continuously overwhelmingly been in favour of ukraine joining the eu.

Zelensky ran an election campaign on peace in Donetsk/Lugansk (there were 2 regions in the civil war that wanted autonomy from Kiev, not just Donbass). He went on TV and called for peace talks, and he called for the following of the Minsk agreement. This is the reality. This is why people voted him into office, he was the opposite of Poroshenko who was pro-civil war and that is why Poroshenko lost in a landslide, embarrassing election results for Poroshenko. Joining NATO has never been a popular idea in the East with the people.

The only region you know, and you only know of it since this invasion happened in Donbass, but believe me, it's not just Donbass that was pro-Russian. As I said before, the MAJORITY of the people living in the East, from Odessa to Kharkov and everything in between, was spoken mainly and only in Russian by the citizens living there. People align more with their Russian heritage in the East, that's the reality. Central Ukraine and Kiev is like 50-50 probably and the further west you go the more the citizens align with anti-Russian policies and speak mostly Ukrainian.

Zelensky popular TV show was filmed 90% in Russian ayyLMAO, from start to finish. And it was basically the #1 watched series in Ukraine. In fact, if you understand the language (Russian/Ukrainian), you can even hear an accent in Zelensky when he speaks Ukrainian. Why? Because he spoke mainly Russian and only Russian his entire life, he had to switch once he became President(especially after the invasion). Before getting elected, he used to travel to Moscow and do comedy shows with other popular comedians(with people like Maksim Galkin), he would do skits on Russian TV. Look at any of Zelensky's comedy skits/routines, it's all done in the Russian language. There's a video of Zelensky giving a speech on TV saying he is ready to meet with Putin and saying how Russians/Ukrainians are “eternal brothers” (I've posted it before, Wincel even quoted the video I believe), this was during his election campaign.

I know because my family comes from that part of the world. (Rostov to be exact, not far from the Ukrainian border)…I've got pics of my family vacationing in Crimea, Odessa, and other cities in the East from when I was a kid. My forename is actually Ukrainian (ends with KO which is typical for a Ukrainian last name). Even tho I grew up in the states, these are my people (Russians/Ukrainians), and my bloodline/heritage goes back to this part of the world. I didn't just start caring about this conflict in Feb 2022. I have been back to both Russia and Ukraine more than once since my family relocated to the U.S., still got relatives/friends of the family who live in both places.

I know what type of people live there(just like you know your place of origin, Albania, better than I do I'm sure), and which region votes for which candidate. East has always voted anti-west candidates for the most part, this is nothing new and has been this way for a very long time. It's not a secret. Similar to how the Southern states and Midwest typically vote Republican all the time. Just like California always votes blue (even tho some who live in Cali prefer red team)
