South Korea birthrate drops again, to 0.78

People were appalled when it had dropped to 0.84 children per woman in 2020, now it's even lower. The continued drop has to level off at some point, but holy crap are they screwed in the decades to come. 52 million people in 2020. BRB 40 million when today's babies are entering the workforce. It makes the worries of the EU and US about population seem minor. Ooof.

Wonder if they can reproduce? In so many of these Asian countries, females take being thin to the extreme. The majority of females in these countries get plastic surgery on their face, not their body.

It's about being cute looking, pale, and tiny.

Realistically if you look at Zoomers and their incel rate, LGBT rate, not in school/work rate, lack of religion/shame, mental illness, social isolation, cost of living, this will be every developed country. No way American Zoomers will have a higher birth rate much higher than 0.78 (at least White Zoomers).

Only difference is countries like the US/Canada/Europe etc. bring millions of immigrants per year to keep the population growing while Korea/Japan don't.

Interesting factor I hadn't considered. If a chick is rail thin she's going to have a harder time getting pregnant. I know a lot of the fertility drop right now is the cost of real estate, which their middle class can largely not afford, so living at home is even more common than it is for Zoomers in the US. I imagine it isn't easy especially for young men to attract young women if they're still living at home, as so many are. From what I hear SK is even more materialistic than US culture. The alternate seems to be working 80 hr weeks, and good look having a social life let alone a family under those conditions.

The US likely has a declining population problem a few decades from now, but it will be slow. South Korea's population is only declining slowly now since their fertility rate in the 90s was still 1.5 -1.7. With it half that now (and no immigration allowed), great googly moogly they're in for hard times by mid-century.

Fingers crossed you're wrong about Zoomers having kids. Though I have no doubt it will drop from current levels. In the 80s and 90s the US fertility rate was just above 2. It immediately dropped when the Great Recession hit and has stayed that way since. We're likely up for another Great Recession soon, so young people will feel less easy about having kids than they currently do. I won't be surprised if upcoming recession gets Biden's idea to make the 2021 expanded child tax credit permanent, to try stopping young people from opting out of parenthood. It probably will do little, but I still would be not surprised to see it pass once the fit hits the shan.
