My sister and her husband, both around 50 make a decent living, over $200K a year and he comes from money, but they'll rent until they die. When they visit they see me out with the leafblower or fixing something a lot, so I kind of get where they're coming from since they have no kids. A house felt mandatory with a growing family for me, but I give no fuks what others do. As with most things I say you do you, boo.

what are they gonna do when they retire? what if they live until they are 100+. Brb gotta spend pension money on rent

Depends, renting from a private landlord is a complete waste of money down the drain no matter how long.

Council/social housing rent less so because here in England we have ‘right to buy’.

Basically means if you rent there properties for 3-5 years, you can buy it to own plus get a massive discount, 35% for houses and 50% for flats/condos

This goes up one percent each year after the 3 year period so you can get a max discount of 70% depending on how long you live there (srs)

Although some of them have a bad rep , there’s actually lots of decent council houses in nice areas despite what people think.

Trust me, they're not living to 100. His parents own multiple properties they rent out in somewhat touristy areas. If the schit hits the fan they'll go live on Martha's Vineyard in retirement with no mortgage. I think they'll be ok. His parents make over $500K/yr and are still working in their 70s. You'd never know from looking at or inside his parents' house though. Definitely not keeping up with the Joneses types.

Of course it all depends on the person and their situation, but on average, I think by around late 20's to early 30's you should at least have enough to put down 20% and is a good time to start building equity in your primary residence.

My goal was always "get a house before 30." I know some people who got houses at ages 22-25. I thought they were idiots at the time because they put minimum down (higher mortgage, PMI, etc.), but fast forward to today where the real estate market multiplied and interest rates tripled, now I think they were lucky AF.

I made some dumb ass decisions at around age 25 with my non-retirement investments (essentially gambled), and basically had to reset myself, rebuild an emergency fund, and only now at age 27 (approaching 28) am I able to start investing again. Even now I still think I'll meet the goal of "before 30 get a house", but I'll be cutting it close probably at age 29 or so.

Point is, I think twenties is the optimal time for all of these things: Finishing education, figuring out your career/income, figuring out your finances, paying debts off, getting a satisfying emergency fund. As such, renting while doing it is totally fine.

Thirties is about when you want to expand your net worth as much as possible, and a mortgage/house is a strategic way to start with that.
