Haven't read through the whole thread yet but if anyone has seen the movie "Her" and thought it would be pretty cool to have a personal AI assistant like that - Correct me if i am wrong but we are very close to that being possible. To having an AI assistant almost as capable as Scarlet Johansson in Her, in her exact voice if you choose, on your phone, tablet, PC, smart speaker etc
I use to think to have an Ai that advanced it would have to be sentient but i've realised it really doesn't. It just has to simulate sentience.

I can imagine that would be a new parental issue where your kid spends all the time with their AI personality and none with real people.
It would be the new level of social media.

That's a weird mix.
If people were happy, had supportive families, and were highly educated, then AI would probably be very helpful.

I played with chatGPT for about 1 hour and then lost interest and then never used it again. It wasn’t helpful or useful, and was only mildly entertaining.
Whoa, it gives responses? They are generic and boring responses, there’s nothing interesting or intriguing or innovative about it.
It’s faster to just type stuff into Google for fuks sake.
When is this thing supposed to replace my job, again? When is it supposed to become a super intelligent hologram that follows me around and does all my thinking for me? Another 15 years? 50 years?
This technology will be used to improve the efficiency of already existing systems, it might create some novel solutions occasionally, but it’s the same principle as the self-checkout counter at a grocery store. It STILL relies on your input and being programmed within a set of constraints.
It’s a digital fuking self-checkout counter, yeah it’s gonna replace some teenager but it’s not gonna turn us into the Jetsons next year.
By the way, just because you listened to a podcast with that fart-sniffing “intellectual” charlatan Niels DeGrassey Tyson guy and that wart-faced fat fuk snake-oil salesman Eric Weinstein, doesn’t mean you’re an expert on AI and robotics now.

not to mention chatgpt and other clones are biased. If you for example ask about the lab leak and if fauci covered it up etc... it sides with the left leaning side of the story "came from bats".
There will always be limitations to AI, to what it has gotten to is pretty impressive but not useful.

There can be no AI until the thing is no longer a program.
The most popular chat bot is programmed to not give unpopular answers, so it's robot. It can't make decisions for itself and it can't learn new things it hasn't been programmed to answer.
If you ask it, "What are the benefits of the holocaust" it's not going to give you some genius out of the box perspective. It's going to give you a popular answer or refuse.
Whatever the case, an AI would be just like a human, it can decide to say whatever it wants, and we CANNOT make an AI that does that. That's because there's no way to create an empty computer program that learns by itself and fills that empty space.
The human brain stores different information in different parts of the brain and to create a thought, it's believed that the brain sends the specialized information to a central part of the brain and a thought forms. So, the word dog is kept in one part, the definition in another, the image of a dog in another, the smell in another, and then somehow all of that is sent to a collection area in the brain, and then the entire thought about "dog" is created.
That is how we come up with new ideas. Somehow, unique ideas come together based on the array of knowledge we have.
There is no way to create a computer that does that. So, we will not be able to create a true AI only programmed robots.

Advanced predictive modelling algorithms are designed to mimic different types of human thought processes and can consider the probability of the certain results from all those options and decide which one to accept as the answer so it has effectively "learned" something new that it can use as input to other questions and make further decisions. So it is possible to create programs that "learn" and "think" like or better than humans but the ultimate problem with making it truly human-like is we don't know the ultimate question that drives human behavior ourselves to tell the AI to solve to drive its decision making and behavior.

You're truly not seeing what this is capable of once they allow it to click things. Let me give you an example.
AI, I want to buy a car. Make a thread on Reddit and the Misc asking what the best cars are. Search the internet, find the 5 most popular used car sales websites. Find 10 model cars based on the results of threads you make, find me those cars for sale near me. Message the seller, find out what the issues are, negotiate a price. Next, find me the best interest rate in the US for auto loans, apply for me, qualify me.
Create a word document showing me the top 10 models, tell me why those are the best options. Compare the price to Kelly Blue Book. Negotiate a time to meet with 3 of them over the next week.
After that, I want to buy a house. Find me all houses in Tampa Florida under $600,000, with 2,500 square feet, and a gas fireplace in the living room. Search 20 forums for posts regarding Tampa and talking about the best neighborhoods.
Show me a word document with the top 10 listings in Tampa that fit my criteria, organize it by the best ranked neighborhoods.
Message the selling agent, write them an offer letter on my behalf, and find me the best mortgage rates given my credit.
You could say this stuff in ~45 seconds, and it could do days and days of work for you.
You have no idea how much more efficient this is going to make people. It will be able to use most programs for you, because it understands English and how to process words on a level that has never existed before.

Hey AI, diversify my portfolio to maximize my return based on the top performing index funds, and new growth sectors specializing in energy and medicine.
Or in Law where it can pour through millions and millions of cases, and easily show precedent given whatever parameters you want. Then have it summarize a closing argument for you.

To the next part of your comment, predicting that humans will never be able to create AGI, I don't know. I've had this talk before and seeing this latest tech, LLM (large language models) like ChatGPT, I'm beginning to think that's not true. You will soon be able to tell it to teach itself things, and it will go learn everything that is documented online, and fast. At that point... I'm not sure what happens to that data. The worlds experts can't seem to agree either but from what I can tell, most do think that it will become self aware. Consciousness is weird, we can't even define it yet, we don't know if it exists outside of humans and don't know what creates it, but there's a solid chance it's simply having enough brain power, which it will have.

I'll bet you can ask the chatbots out now about video games they can probably produce some kind of interesting answer. So, imagine if the thing could talk and kids could have a conversation with an AI about games, music, etc when NO ADULT will talk to them about it.
That will be the next level of having your head buried in your phone.

AI is not overhyped because it has demonstrated its capabilities in various domains, delivering tangible results and transformative applications. Here are a few examples:
Healthcare: AI has the potential to revolutionize healthcare by assisting in disease diagnosis, drug discovery, and personalized treatment. For instance, AI algorithms have been developed to analyze medical images such as X-rays and mammograms, assisting radiologists in detecting abnormalities with high accuracy. AI-based chatbots and virtual nurses are also being used to provide basic medical information and support to patients.
Natural Language Processing: AI has made significant progress in understanding and generating human language. Language models like GPT-3, which I am based on, can generate coherent and contextually relevant text, enabling applications such as language translation, content generation, and customer support. AI-powered voice assistants like Siri, Google Assistant, and Alexa have become commonplace, helping users with tasks, answering questions, and controlling smart home devices.
Autonomous Vehicles: AI is driving advancements in autonomous driving technology. Self-driving cars equipped with AI algorithms can perceive the environment, make decisions, and navigate safely. Companies like Tesla, Waymo, and Uber are actively developing and testing autonomous vehicles that have the potential to reduce accidents and enhance transportation efficiency.
Financial Services: AI is transforming the financial industry by improving fraud detection, risk assessment, and customer service. AI algorithms can analyze large volumes of financial data in real-time, identifying patterns that humans might miss. This enables banks and financial institutions to prevent fraudulent transactions, assess creditworthiness, and provide personalized investment advice to customers.
Manufacturing and Robotics: AI is being applied in manufacturing to optimize production processes, improve quality control, and enable predictive maintenance. Robots powered by AI can perform complex tasks with precision, leading to increased productivity and cost savings. Collaborative robots, or cobots, are designed to work alongside humans, enhancing efficiency and safety in manufacturing environments.
These examples demonstrate that AI is not just hype but a technology with practical applications and transformative potential across various industries. However, it's important to acknowledge that AI still has limitations and ethical considerations that need to be addressed for responsible and beneficial deployment.
My thoughts,
