Getting married and buying a house - keep which cars?
Hey folks, trying to figure out what to do with my cars. Getting married in June, building an expensive house in another town. Could keep all of them, but looking for some cost savings without losing utility. I will be working from home mostly when we move.
Current vehicles:
Hers: 2019 Mazda CX5 - 8k owed (worth 20k or so)($350/mo payment for another 2 years)
Mine:
2008 Porsche Cayenne turbo - paid off (worth 20k or so) - had for 6 years, only 100k miles, have done ALL the preventative maintenance and more, set to run a lot longer
2018 BMW M550i - owe 25k, worth about 35k - favorite car I've ever had ($750/mo payment for another 2 years)
(2) BMW E39 5-series restoration projects nearly done, no loan, worth about 5k each
I love the utility of the cayenne. Being able to haul ass and tow anything is beautiful to me. And it's in great shape. But she hates the loud exhaust and the age shows on the interior due to a lack of features that newer cars have. Gas mileage is awful tho.
She likes her car and isn't looking to change. Obvious answer is sell all mine except the Cayenne. Just gonna really miss the highway characteristics of the M550i, and we'll be a 4+ hour drive from family so will be on the road a decent bit.
Other direction I'm thinking is sell all mine and get a 2023 GMC Canyon Denali to keep the utility but add good highway characteristics and interior features.
Thoughts?

When I bought my house having my suv was paramount for the first few months/year because I was doing alot of work on the home. Being able to run to home depot and bring anything I needed back was pretty clutch as well as take stuff to the dump.

The 550i is a nice car, but the Mazda will be just as nice on road trips IMO and more fuel efficient. You could save a lot of money by selling the BMW. You won’t be driving it much, but the depreciation alone will add up over the next few years. I’d keep the cayenne as a practical vehicle since it’s already depreciated and the poor fuel economy won’t matter much since it won’t get too many miles put on it since you wfh

New houses are mad expensive, highly suggest getting rid of car notes. Sell the 550i to pay off her car, then sell one of the E39’s to finish the other E39 and modernize the Cayenne with a nice tablet style wireless CarPlay head unit (Pioneer 8600NEX, Kenwood DMX1059, etc) and a back up camera.
But, the new redesigned Canyons are AWESOME. So if you aren’t too strapped, sell ALL your 4 cars and get the Canyon.

Her CX should be able to handle 90% of your home improvement hauling needs.
Yeah I'd sell all of your cars and get something powerful and comfortable for long highway trips. A certified 2020 740i is certainly within your budget or older 750i since you love smooth bmws and the longer wheelbase and better nvh means it will be better cruiser.

Op how's the reliability and what's the mileage on the BMW 550i? Isn't it out of warranty at this point?

Without knowing your exact income and free cash-flow. If I were me I'd probably sell the three BMW and keep the Canyenne. Once yall are married stack as much cash/pay off your wife's vehicle ASAP.
I get it, paying car notes are a norm. But as someone who's been debt free aside from mortgage for years I can honestly say its a massive weight off your shoulders.
If in a couple of years you really want something else and you know what you want get it. And then sell the Canyenne as a private sale.
$750 a month is not a lot of money. But an extra 9K per year in the bank/investment accounts can make a big difference man. Especially in these markets. I'd be dumping as much as possible into investments.

Sell all your cars, get a year old X5 and buy the extended warranty. Then you're gucci until 2027 and don't need to think about spending $6000 on fuel injectors alone if they decide to fail.
- Got the utility aspect of being able to haul chit around

Keep the Cayenne and whichever e39 you like better or is closer to completion, sell the 550 and the other e39.

Lots of good posts in here, really appreciate it. Everyone seems to be saying something different which is what I keep doing, so it's a tough decision. I do think keeping the cayenne and one E39 is the way to go

If I were in this situation and concerned about $$ (which is understandable) I would get rid of anything I could that you still owe on and make a monthly payment.
Keep her MX-5 & the paid off Cayenne...
You can easily replace the other vehicles down the road once you get more comfortable with your new financial responsibilities

thats the thing about luxury sports sedans, as much as you love them, they become very costly to own and not practical enough to justify with family life....but is life only and all about practicality? There can be a balance.
the M550i will also lose the most value even in an inflated used car market but its also the greatest ride quality which doesn't compare to crossovers or SUVs. I love grand touring cars too much also.
If i was in your boat, i would convince wife to sell her car because you can still get good money for CX5..trust me i get emails from dealerships daily to buy back the car. I find CX5 is too small for being a hauler compared to cayenne.
do know that if you sell the sedans, in future, there wont be many of them left around. There will always be newer models of Cayenne and japanese crossovers.

Id sell the project cars first, toss that money to the mazda. Then reevaluate everything. Then sell the newer bmw when you're close to closing on the new house. Relax for 2 years, save money then trade in the porsche for an x5m.
