incompetent HVAC tradies

furnace stopped working so i called in the tradies to come fix it

first they thought it was the thermostat, so they installed a new one and charged $500 (jfl)

they left and the furnace worked for like 10 minutes and then shut off again

i call them back and say its still not working. they come back 24 hours later and put in a new part in the furnace. they leave and chit still doesnt work.

theyre on their way back now. is this just an inexperienced journeyman or something?

I feel like most HVAC techs are worse than used car salesman...

AC stops working and you immediately need an entire new unit at $10,000.

Could be a bad run capacitor. $15
Could be a bad power transformer. $25
Could be a bad master board. $75
Could be a bad ignitor. $20

You can replace all the above with a screwdriver and socket set.

It's basically an unwritten rule among HVACcels that if an AC unit is older than a decade they just say"there's nothing that can be done"even if it can be fixed with a simple capacitor replacement. They'll always push the complete removal and installation of a brand new unit. Because that's where the real money comes from in the grift....i mean job.

It’s not as straightforward as you think. Rarely is there just one problem and with control boards problems can be intermittent and difficult to diagnose. Having said that there’s definitely different levels of technicians.

I totally understand. Luckily we had an amazing HVAC tech come out and work on our AC unit years ago when we bought our first house. He basically said most AC units are replaced due to higher efficiency costs (newer units are so much more efficient that they pay for themselves over time) over maintenance/unrepairable costs. He also said most HVAC companies push an entire system (AC/Heat) even though a large population don't use the heater much or at all, so why replace that unit..

I have respect for tradies, but the good ones are very few and far between who don't try to screw you with meaningless ****. To me it's borderline extortion

Pretty redundant statement OP. We had a saying at work, there is a fine line between an hvac tech and a homeless guy.

Everyone is usually scamming.... but because they have no actual skill, it's usually easier to completely replace than it is to repair. They basically guarantee that their incompetence won't come back to haunt them if they just put in all new. Car guys do this too, and bicycle techs do as well. If you ever fix your own stuff, you will quickly see the logic behind it.

When you deal with tradies always expect to pay more than you think you should and always build in the re-work time needed when their original work sucks or stops working.

Just lol at tradies.

hvac looks easy as chit to me.

im not totally sure on some of the science(y) aspect like freezing and recirculating air, but ive been watching the a/c guys put chit up in a big commercial building. its literally big fuken units there's no chance they built, but installed. maybe a bit of electrical? then its been like just big ducts

electrical has so many little components.

BUT, i do think they might go into attics quite a bit

What was the code from the blinking red lights? Furnaces self diagnose and most of the time, it's an easy fix. Take the front panel off, turn the furnace switch off for 30 seconds then turn it back on. Look for the blinking red lights and count.how many times it blinks. There is a list on the bottom of the inside part that'll tell you what's wrong
