What is the safest way to invest $70,000?

I am talking about like zero risk, very low growth. The banks have CD's and money market. Is there a slightly better return on it than that?

Treasury bills are among the lowest risk investments in the entire economy theoretically. No, they don't normally give better returns. They are where you put your money if you can't decide where to put it.

There are CDs out there offering 5.5% for over 12 months, check Schwab. Would say that's probably your best bet.

Why wouldn't you just put it in a vanguard style fund? Top 100 index fund. The stock market has only crashed a couple times in the last 100 years.

That's not a fixed rate though, and your money is locked in for 5 years minimum. I put $10,000 into I Bonds last year when rates were in the 9% range, but it's really only a diversification strategy.
