Looking back: John Edwards' 2011 indictment (vs Trump's 2023)

People are calling Trump's indictment unprecedented, which is true. But we do have a somewhat similar case for comparison: John Edwards in 2011-2012.

Edwards was charged by the DOJ for campaign-finance charges. He allegedly paid about $1 million to support his pregnant mistress. Prosecutors tried to argue that the money, which never passed through Edwards' campaign accounts, was a campaign donation because it was intended to prevent damage to his campaign (it is the same argument that Bragg is allegedly using against Trump). Edwards and his attorneys countered by arguing that the payments were personal expenses and that Edwards made the payments to keep his wife out of the loop, not to help his presidential bid.

In the end, the jury acquitted Edwards. At the time, many Democrats and legal experts criticized the DOJ's decision to seek charges against Edwards, arguing that considering personal expenses to be campaign donations is too much of a stretch.

Lol of course liberals don't see how this could be bigger than just getting "the orange moron". We have officially indicted a past Preisdent for the first time in history. It's open season on all politicians now. Unfortunately the Republicans are too spineless to do anything so it will just be liberals going after the likes of Rand Paul.
Face it Sille both sides are garbage, but your side is running "Blue" cities into the fuking ground. Must be nice to live in a nice and safe neighborhood where the worst you have to worry about is a kid breaking your mailbox. Meanwhile every morning on the news I see multiple shootings that happened overnight. You guys are so focused on destroying one man that you are totally oblivious to the other things that are occurring like how we are one step away from World War 3. Also how our culture is going to total **** and we live in clown world where we have drag queen story time at schools. Oh not to mention how the elites continue to get bailed out of the messes they create but no let's focus on taking down Trump. Call it cope idc but I think we are all being fooled by another distraction. No no don't look at us trying to pass a modern day Patriot act focus on Trump. Trump honestly put himself in this mess since he said he would "drain the swamp" and failed to do so.

Hopefully it's televised so we can watch Trump roll his eyes, have angry outbursts, demand a recess so he can change his pants when he is incontinent.

NYC doesn't allow videotaped court cases. It's why no NY criminal case ever airs on CourtTV

It effectively ended Edwards political career, too. If that's the same outcome for Trump, that's good enough.

Come to think of it, it made him pretty much irrelevant too. I don’t remember even seeing John Edwards in the past decade.

Republicans love damaged goods candidates though. Then get outraged when they lose lol.

Trump essentially did the same thing as Clinton, only difference Trump did it before he was in office and never lied under oath

It's a case of the ends justify the means. Four more years of either Trump or Biden may be more than the country can survive.

And Clinton didn't violate campaign finance law to cover it up. It's almost exactly equivalent to Clinton's case. Nailed on a technicality related to covering up his sordid activity when he should have just admitted it because no one cares anyway. This isn't the 1600's any more.

Yeah, Ramone fukked up there. The case is about how Trump tried to cover it up. Should have just said “Yeah, I fukked porn stars” instead.

Why did the FEC decide not charge Trump then? Why is it a DA from Manhattan?

I don't know. I haven't seen any of the evidence nor am I an expert on the laws that were allegedly broken. I guess we'll find out at trial, now, won't we?

First of all, it looks like the arguement for calling it campaign money fraud against Trump is pretty weak.

Secondly, it's pretty telling when someone will go to great lengths to defend the well known degeneracy of Wild Willy, and in the same breath talk about how they want to see Trump get nailed on something that amounts to a lame technicality at worst.

You wanna talk political campaign finance ethics? How about the billions disgraced former FTX CEO Sam Bankman Fried donated to Democrat candidates throughout the U.S. in 2022 that the media decided to conveniently not care about, and that the DOJ/FBI/etc. all just decided to ignore? But a porn star whore supposedly got $130,000k in hush money from someone connected to Trump!?! Oh noez!!!!!

I'd say Alec Baldwin, but I think he has his own issues to sort out in a court of law. LOL.

FYI -- the criminal case didn't end Edwards' political career. It was more of the sleazy act of keeping a secret mistress and illegitimate child while his wife was dying of cancer. Criminal case or not, he was done

Speaking of Clinton and campaign financing, Clinton did violate some campaign finance laws taking 3 million from chinese nationals (some of them registered CCP members), but bulldog Reno came in and shut the investigation down before it worked its way up to the Clintons. The folks that laundered the money got locked up, but then the investigation mysteriously ended.

So...Paying a whore $150,000 or whatever it was because you fukked her, vs. taking 3 million from the chinese, 1 million from an aerospace contractor, then letting that aerospace contractor sell ballistic missile technology to an enemy of the United States and also granting China favorable trade status. Lets def go after Trump for what he did though.

I love how you *******s love to play this, "Well, someone else got away with a crime, so our Supreme Leader should too" card. No, sometimes criminals beat cases. It happens. That doesn't mean you just stop prosecuting criminals.

It wrecked Edwards career because his whole image was based on him being this man of traditional family values, then he turns around and has an extramarital affair while his wife is dying of cancer, which makes the affair even more morally reprehensible.

With Trump on the other hand, I don't think most of his base is shocked he would bang a porn star on the side. This also happened prior to him running for office. Most are probably thinking along the lines of "I wish Trump didn't do that, but let's move on; he's all we have right now."

If Trump gets wrecked from this, it will be from litigation, not because of damage to his reputation.
