The Financial Times reported, citing people familiar with Saudi Arabia’s thinking, that Riyadh was “irritated” by that comment. In any case, it came on top of stress in the financial sector that had dragged oil prices as low as $64 in March.

I've never really been bothered by gas prices personally even though my main driver gets 19 mpg in mixed driving, but oil is the lifeblood of a modern economy, so its direction is always a big deal for the economy at large. Are we going to pretend otherwise?

Oil is one part of the economy and important for sure, I wouldn't really say it'sthelifeblood (information, banking etc. are equally important), and how big of a deal routine price fluctuations are is relative.

I don't know what the 1970's "oil crises" was like in real life, but in my lifetime fuel costs have never been an issue and we as a country have never gone without over any significant period of time.
