The Soviets did not compete at that olympics and instead held their own "friendship games." Their super heavyweight, Anatoly Pisarenko, put up a total of 465kg, beating the gold medal winner by an astounding 52.5kg (115lbs).

Back in those olden days (actually, even further back, in the 1970s), the Soviet's top weightlifter was Vasily Alekseyev (super heavyweight).

The USSR Sports Ministry would pay their athletes a relatively modest salary, but they would get bonuses for winning competitions and especially for setting/breaking world records.

Alekseyev set 80 world records in his career. In an interview, he once said that he made sure to only break the super heavyweight event records by the smallest amount possible, so he both collect the bonus for winning the event and breaking the record, and then continue to do so for many years by this incremental approach even though he was capable of much bigger lifts all along.

His primary competitor at that time was an East German named Gerd Bonk. When Alekseyev was once asked his opinion of this rival, he said "Bonk is a sissy".

In 1979, when the U.S. Embassy in Iran was overrun and the staff was taken hostage for a period of years, President Jimmy Carter faced a lot of criticism and was labeled as weak.

To look tougher, he decided to boycott the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow because of their war in Afghanistan.

Four years later, in the expected "tit-for-tat" reprisal, the U.S.S.R. boycotted the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

A number of other countries in the "sphere of influence" of the Soviets were pressured to follow the Russian's lead.

Australians did not even compete under their own flag at the 1980 Olympics.
