* Self-Improvement Crew * Third Edition

These threads used to be a gold mine for me back in the day. Post anything about your goals or how you're currently working on yourself. Please share any videos, podcasts etc. you've found useful. If you need to vent some of your frustrations, stay accountable, or just chat in general about self-improvement, then this is the place for you.

It's been a minute since I posted (maybe 7 years?) so a lot has changed for me. I've been steadily building a digital marketing business while doing a lot of travel so I can't complain on that front. However, I've let my health slip and need to get back on track with lifting, diet etc.

I wanted to keep this original post brief, so I'll talk more about my goals, plans, etc. in future posts.

While I don't really watch too many out-and-out motivational videos these days, these kicked me into gear in recent days:

Some of my initial health/fitness goals:

- Drop around 11kg/25lbs in bodyweight
- Do 3x weight sessions per week
- Do 2x cardio-focused sessions per week
- Walk briskly for an hour a day
- Hit 1g of protein per pound of body weight each day
- Cut out snacking after my last meal
- Have a protein-dense breakfast

Definitely agree that productivity is about focus. It’s crazy how much easier it is to focus when you’ve got your health on point. I feel super human workwise when I’m getting quality sleep, not eating crap, and regularly exercising. Focusing on this one area should have a good knock-on effect for other aspects of my life.

Congrats on the new job! I just saw your thread, sounds like you'll be nice and active. What are your current weight loss goals?

A crazy busy week ahead now so planning a few things out. I just use a pen and pad but I see people online using these fancy planners and journals. Must be good money in selling those types of productivity tools, relatively easy to make. People love that type of productivity porn, using them is probably just another form of procrastination.

On another note, I've come across a lot of content recently about Bryan Johnson. He's an eccentric individual who spends millions trying to reverse ageing. It looks like it's turning him into a LOTR elf.... Worth a look for anyone interested:

In 4 later/in 4 inspiration.

Not doing too much right now as I'm focusing on my injuries, but I think that is the most optimal move for me. Had been spreading myself thin but getting more focused is seeming to pay dividends.

Hopefully have another couple months of injury recovery and then it's some hardcore exercising and socialmaxxing for me.

It'll be good to get the injuries sorted and then build from there. The end is in sight by the sounds of it thankfully for the rehab, never the most exciting thing to be doing.

Have any particular areas you're looking to dial in on for improvement?

Good progress! I'll have to start looking at IFing too. One of my shredded friends swears by occasional 2 or 3-day fasts. Not sure how feasible that would be for me atm though. Atomic Habits is a great read, hopefully you get a lot out of it. Definitely well worth the hype it gets.

I'm just doing straight CICO weight loss right now. 500 cal daily deficits, cheat day once every 2-3 weeks. I'm down 12 lbs since Jan 7th, and losing 20 lbs is the goal.

I've got zero fukking energy to work out on this cut, but once I hit goal weight, I'd like to train to run a 5K.

Great progress so far. Have you maintained a 500-calorie daily deficit the whole time or have you increased it since January?

500 steady has been the goal. Cheating that limit up caused me to stall a week, and cutting further under it fuks up my sleep.

My boss just asked this afternoon if I've been losing weight. External validation feelsgoodman.

Sounds like you've found the sweet spot for you. Nothing better than when others start noticing your gains. That's probably motivating you to keep going? Hard work is paying off.

I find blister plasters great when they're on the back of my heel. Other positions can be a bit more awkward. Funnily enough, I find running energy sapping while doing it in the moment but it fills me full of energy afterwards.

Hope everyone's having a good week so far and is ready to finish it out strong.

Not sure if anyone else is a member of Masterclass. There are some decent instructors on there that I've enjoyed listening to and learning from. Chris Voss is a former FBI hostage negotiator and has appeared on tons of popular podcasts over the years. I went through his course recently and found it beneficial. While its focus is on negotiation, it applies to all forms of communication IMO. Here's a YT video that covers some of the key points:

While some aspects might seem quite simple, I've found them to be very effective in really getting people to engage and leave a conversation with a good impression. Particularly the use of "it seems" as explained in the above video has proven very useful. How to Win Friends and Influence Peopleis still the best book out there for communication skills IMO. It should be on school curriculums. Here's the Masterclass trailer that covers the Voss topics more in-depth:

I'll post some of my notes of the Masterclass for anyone interested in the coming days.

Not the usual ra-ra Garyvee type of video. Just a reminder for myself and others to not feed into the motivational pron loop and focus on actually getting chit done.

I know Garyvee divides opinions (including my own) but I just took the above clip in isolation. The point of it hits the nail on the head and kind of rallies against the people who follow him so religiously.

I love self-improvement.

Have been cutting weight and the girls be lookin during yoga.

Did some slight improvement on wardrobe but much more needs to be done. So far the little has made a difference.

Been reading a TON.

Changing my inherent belief system at the moment.

Also, re-reading Atomic Habits (GOAT book) so I can get started on a habit streak.

Okay. Productivity is great. Doesn't make it the only type of self-improvement.

Too many people have slipped into hopelessness and resignation. Even young kids.

Intentional positivity is a real necessity. I do follow events and try to keep up with what is going on. It's meant to be a map of the terrain.

It's absolutely time to make changes and choices.
