Learned the hard way.
When I was rock bottom everyone left me all of a sudden.
You can have a good time with friends you can have a good time with a girl.
But if you ever have a bad time they will all leave you.
Then when you meet them again 10+ years later and you are doing well.
They are like hey how u doing?

I learned this harsh lesson after my dad passed. Specifically, I was crossing the street, and car ran a red light and hit me 5 months ago. Car drove off. I laid on the ground and cars just kept driving pass me (at 6 am, it's pretty much all illegals going to work). I finally crawled to the side. The police have done nothing to even try and get the guy even though their were cameras and a witness got the guys liscense plate. I don't own a car, and this person's car had the cheapest progressive insurance (didn't matter cause they couldn't prove it was him apparently. I have extensive nerve damage in my left leg. The first doctor literally had one foot out the door after seeing me and just kept telling me to wait for it to heal (it had been getting worse and worse over time). Finally he just threw a physical therapy script my way, which I know would not work (i have a degree in exercise science and multiple personal training scripts. I now deal with pain everyday and it's very hard to walk, and am out thousands in medical bills.
Long story short, the bystandards didn't care I laid helpless in the middle of the road. The police didn't care about doing anything to solve the crime, the doctors didn't care about moving forward in finding out my leg pain. I am paying out of pocket for an MRI next week. I didn't even bother to tell friends because they have their own families to deal with and wouldn't care. I grew up always trying to help people, doing volunteer work, and doing my best to help anyone with problems I could be of assistance. I realized I was just a sucker. No one gives a fuk about anyone but themselves. People think being helpful nowadays is telling some 400lb female on reddit she is beautiful, or encouraging and supporting someone online that wants to cut their dick off. People think that things like this makes them a generous good hearted person. Somone will give some outlier examples of someone dedicating their lives to help others, but mostly people are sh*t.
The irony isn't lost on me that in college I did several mission trips to poor parts of Ecuardor. My city is like 95% Ecuadorian, so because of one, I may never be able to walk without pain again.
Long story short, the bystandards didn't care I laid helpless in the middle of the road. The police didn't care about doing anything to solve the crime, the doctors didn't care about moving forward in finding out my leg pain. I am paying out of pocket for an MRI next week. I didn't even bother to tell friends because they have their own families to deal with and wouldn't care. You are right OP but that can be extremely liberating when framed correctly. I would suggest that is right where we want to be.
A lot of us walk around pretending other people are out to get us and that our problems are a result of other people trying to “get” us.

I'm a bit on the fence with it. I do think one of the people you can 100% rely on is yourself. I've been burned a lot in the past trying to help others and caring for them only for them to spit on it. But I will say I've been lucky enough to have a few instances that showed me the opposite as well.
True kindness from others is few and far in between, but is worth so much when you find them because through good and bad, they're there.
I've also seen it for patients in the ICU and it's honestly reaffirming that there is genuine love in this world.
