Loneliness is brutal as you get older as a single, unemployed guy
Can go weeks without speaking to anyone
And when I finally do it's just empty platitudes like saying hello to the cashier at the grocery store
Exist in a shadow realm where it doesn't matter whether you exist or not because nobody would care or notice if you didn't
Nights blend into days, days into nights, weeks in months, and through it all you realize the loneliness will worsen the older you get
Until one day it will finally be over and it will be as if you never existed in first place and this loneliness is a prelude to your meaninglessness

Disagree with OP . I’m 62 and eventually you figure out that 99.9 % of people are A-holes out for themselves.
Not lonely whatsoever . OP reminds me of rich people who are unhappy

The older I get more I enjoy solitude, the world has pretty much lost its chit so I don't even have a desire to try. I do have a few decent friends though so when I want to interact socially I can. I'm also not unemployed and my happiness comes from what I'm able to do with my work.

Loneliness is a state of mind. I've been around groups of people and still felt alone
If you have a good relationship with yourself you'll almost never feel alone srs.

Death is a certainty for all, it doesn't matter how happy, lucky, fortunate you are. Doesn't matter how many people you've effected or made friends with, or your general involvement or perception with society. Doesn't matter if you have a wife/gf, or even kids.
Your timeline is finite. And it is up to you to fill it up with milestones, hobbies, skills, successes and failures. You have no control over most things, and perhaps even your accomplishments are random acts of luck or otherwise perhaps only partially influenced by your timing and level of efforts.
While it may be optimal to have a projection for your life's timeline, it is nearly impossible for it to go exactly as planned. However it is important nonetheless to realize and act upon a projection, so that by your final years, you possess a minimization of regret, along with an abundance of preferred comforts and activities. Whether it's entertaining or passing on knowledge to grand kids, or playing the latest favored video game to its completion.
EDIT:
The lack of control is something all must face on a frequent basis. And it's something that people can fear. But I prefer viewing life itself like a randomized series of events, and it's up to you as an individual to look upon it with as much of an optimistic and positive view as is possible.

Maybe one day you will have the epiphany that leaning into your "smugness" is actually counterproductive to your own happiness and self-defeating. Probably not but it's always still possible you silly ol' dude

Once you get older it’s tough making friends and honestly o don’t want any. It’s just married couples going out to brag about their stuff. That’s all people at work do. Ask a million questions and brag about their stuff. I just work, hit the gym and come home.

to be honest most people don't care about you unless they benefit from you being around...are you rich with a boat? do sloots elevate their status by being with you? can you get people jobs? do you partake in their addiction of choice? can you fix their crap when it breaks?

Either that, or they just want to talk about the latest TV show or sports-ball event currently in season.
...but in all honesty, what else is there to talk about to strangers thats actually engaging? Certainly not the weather.

You know what makes it even worse? The fact that when you die, and you go down that tunnel to see the light, your life flashes before your eyes and before you know it, you're back here on earth as a fresh new born baby, screaming your lungs out because you just realized you're back in this chithole again, you scream and you scream until you pass out in your mommies lap. Next thing you know you wake up and your memory is completely wiped from that hepatitis B vaccine they give babies 24 hours within birth. You can no longer remember your past life. And the cycle continues, enjoy your stay again.

The best relationships I ever had was with people who I chatted up out of nowhere. Met my best friend at a bus stop outside of our college gym. Met my childhood friends just riding around outside on my bike. Met so many people just doing random chit, it was never planned. Just recently this older woman chatted me up and I had the most interesting conversation I'd had in over 10 years.
You just never know until you try.
