Nope.
Assuming zero bonuses/overtime for a month where there's only two paychecks (2 months a year there's 3 pay checks)... my take home is about $7.5k after taxes and 401k contribution. My "leisurely carefree" CoL is probably $4k/mo. My "penny-pinching" CoL is probably $3k/mo depending. So I take home an excess of $3.5k-4.5k/mo above my CoL most of the time.
If I were fired (unlikely), and had no severance package (very unlikely), I'd be able to afford living for nearly a year, before I'd have to consider loans, or going into my 401k.
Helps to be debt free to keep the CoL low.

no consumer debt besides mortgage, cars paid off, no credit cards, no student loans

Still nice to look at the bright side of: "well even though I'm in the rat race, at least if I fall off the wheel right now I wouldn't have to accept negative interest in my life via debt, or even live out on the streets."
