It's semantics, so there's really no right or wrong answer. A word means whatever the majority of people agree it means. Sure, a decade ago sex and gender were synonyms and everyone agreed on that, but now a lot of people are using gender to refer to a person's sexual identity, why does that bother you so much?

Awful and awesome used to be synonyms (both meant "awe inspiring"), but people started using awful differently and now everyone agrees it has a negative connotation. If you had lived through that change, would you have written a post all pissy about it saying "awful and awesome are the same thing! Change my mind if you disagree!!!" ?

First of all, gender is a philological term. Only in the last 80 or so years has it been used synonymously with sex. Biological sex is binary. Plain and simple. If you want to talk about gender roles or gender expression, that is not the same as sex. A gay man is a man in terms of sex, but his gender expression is going to be far different from mine, an alpha male's. So, I think you can distinguish between the two to some extent, but sex is fixed and cannot be changed.
