If they became a state, the infrastructure investment would be huge, and they would actually start to grow.

Split Utah, South Dakota, and Florida all into two seperate states each, for a combined total of 3 new states, and an automatic 6 new senate seats that will be reliably Republican.
That'd be about as fair as the Dems who constantly piss and moan about how they think turbo liberal Washington D.C. and the Phillippines should be granted statehood.

Why would anyone want to become a US state after we default on our debt, as our country spirals into oblivion culturally, and the nation fractures among conservative and radical liberal lines?

Wall off NYC, Chicago, LA, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Austin, Atlanta, and Denver. Let them be "city states" like DC. They can have electoral votes, but are not part of the states they were any more. Also, every Democrat has to live in one of them. Off topic, but an idea.

Revoke statehood for Hawaii. Shouldn't be more than an overseas territory.
