I've got a Legion - I find them to be the 'hidden gem' of gaming laptops. Whenever I look at gaming laptops they are less expensive than their competitors (sometimes by a lot) for comparably or better-specced models.

I assume the rest of their offerings are also decent, but no firsthand experience.

I know nothing when it comes to laptops. I mean I did try the last time I bought one [5 years ago -ish].

It had an issue and my ex worked on it for me [replaced a part]. But it was too slow for me and maybe a year or so ago my daughter took it over.

She says it's beat and we should be looking for a new one.

So if anyone wants to drop some knowledge or a link re:the sweet spot for quality/performance and price that would be good.




Oh, and she says she thinks the performance issue for me was "too many tabs".

Have had my Ideapad 3 for four years and it still runs like a top. SSD drive seriously changes the game in laptops.

But unless you're gaming or doing high end graphic applications, that's serious overkill for a laptop.

I think my old one has SSD drive? Not sure. It was something new-ish that had only recently come into use.

I like to try and get something that won't be quickly obsolete and it seems like the ability to work with a lot of images [photo/video editing, this new AI stuff] could be a utility worth having with how things have been trending. Personally don't care much anymore about the MSOffice system.

I have one and it’s great. Love it, actually. Does everything I need it to do and the battery is awesome.

Got a Lenovo and it broke down within like a year.

I have a Lenovo Y40, its a good laptop, I've had it for 9 years now. I'll be replacing this laptop with another Lenovo when GTA6 comes out.

Individual consumers won’t need much of a GPU to access AI applications, unless you plan on training your own models (since most of these GPUs will exist in a data center). Realistically, GPUs likely won’t even be doing AI accelerator work in a few years so it won’t matter

I looked into many Lenovo laptops. I ended up settling on an M2 Macbook. With a series of promos, it cost around $1000 CAD.

Lenovo and Asus make laptops with much better features, that are more powerful, and with OLED screens - but ultimately I just need the best possible ******** machine. I have a desktop for heavy lifting. My priority with a laptop is battery life, feel, and weight. Resale value is also a factor to consider, because while overpriced relative to Windows machines, Apple Computers are much easier to sell. Prior to the shift to the Apple Silicon, I don't think I would have bothered with an Apple Computer unless it was a refurb at a great price. The problem with powerful laptops is throttling and battery life. Most powerful laptops don't have the cooling necessary to maintain their power (ironic given I got a Macbook Air), the specs also kill the battery life. What's the point? Get a portable laptop and a powerful desktop. I can only see it making sense if you have a job that requires you to travel, and you need to use resource intensive Windows programs.

The best value laptop is a refurbished Thinkpad. They feel great, and are dirt cheap. They downsides are that they are stuck on older versions of Windows, or you have to use an alternative operating system, like a Chrome knockoffs, or Linux, which is only for weirdos. You also have to occasionally pause what you're doing to wonder if the previous owner jizzed on the keyboard. The battery life with them is so good, that even a beat up Thinkpad will still get you 5 or 6 hours on the old battery. A few years ago, I think I paid 200 Canadian for a x250, or something like that - and despite beating it into the ground it is still going strong. I donated it to an elderly person and they haven't fallen for a phishing e-mail since I gave it to them.

A big problem with a Macbook tho is that you get a lot of guys hitting on you at Starbucks. Which is fine if you're into guys, but if you're not is inconvenient.

I also put a Che Guevara sticker on mine - I expected that people would understand it is ironic. Instead, I have people flagging me down expecting my opinion on critical race theory and the gender pay gap.

It's still worth it because it gets really good battery life and fits in my bag.
