I sold my SC Bronson because it was just WAY too much bike for my pedaly trails. The VPP system is so efficient that it feels smoother than the fork - no matter how you tune it
I’ve done some uphill on it and it seems about the same or maybe a little better than my previous bike. But previous bike was a pretty cheap aluminum frame with base model components. I was torn between this upgrade or sticking with what I had and buying a strictly downhill bike… but there are a lot of big/long mixed rides I do. This year I think I’m doing the whole enchilada again and might add the palisade plunge in this year on top of my usual downhill resort type rides. Definitely will be happy to have megatower for those 2.

Forgot about this thread. Finished my bike leg of IM texas in 5:30. Pretty happy with that considering I was only at 175 normalized watts. Was only my 3rd outdoor ride of the year lol. Been doing all zwift before until I got to Texas.

What kinda riding you do? Are you certain you want to stick with hard tail? I’ve found you can get quality bikes 2nd hand on pink bike or even ******** marketplace. I’d rather buy something 1-2 years old and lightly used at 1/2 to 1/3 of retail than pay full retail. Then if anything breaks just replace and you’ll still be better off than new.

From my research hard tail seems to be the recommended route unless you're the hardcore type. The added weight and maintenance of the 2nd shock isn't worth it.

I've wrecked hard enough once to know I won't be doing anything hard core anymore. My riding with this bike would be a mixture of concrete, gravel, and the occasional trip in the mountains on mild trails that the GF could handle. If I'm riding it around town, then I'll plan on having a 2nd set of wheels.

I have no issue with 2nd hand, but it's a variety of bikes listed on FB and I don't know a lot about the components on the bikes I'd be looking at. People also have a hard time listing the size and then sizes aren't the same across manufacturers it seems, so I'm leaning towards buying new. Since I'd be taking it camping, I'd rather not spend a lot due to the chance of it being stolen as well.

REI told me the co-op bike will be going on a significant sale on the 19th, so I'm curious what that price will be since the reviews are generally good.

Blew a spoke today on my chit tier bike so I'll be de-lacing an old wheel, swapping rims, and replacing spokes tomorrow.

I've learned that I need to eat absolutely nothing before my morning rides. I tried a bowl of oatmeal before mountain biking yesterday and had absolutely zero power; felt bonky immediately. I don't know if it's because I'm getting older or what, but my empty stomach sunrise rides are so much better than after a small meal. I need to do just 1 shot of espresso, then go ride.

Hell yeah, barely used road bikes on those sites would be best. But be like the other brah and go to REI and try different bikes if you really don't know exactly what you want.

Don't forget you need water bottles, tire pump, water bottle cages, helmet, maybe shoes/pedals, a multi tool, a portable pump to take on rides, a phone mount, headlight/tail light, and a saddle bag.

Budget in those^ accessories.

They dropped REI bike from $600 to $480. I got a $30 coupon for signing up as a member. Got their credit card, which saves 15% on purchases, then I get $100 back for any non-REI purchase. So $600 bike becomes $382.

I've heard the Trek Marlin is very similar, but it's $600 still. Will REI let me ride it outside around the store or what? I need the XL and they only had the L, but it felt decent to sit on.

Obviously I think I'll become an avid REI purchaser now that we have one nearby. Can't beat good customer service!

What's a good way to learn bike maintenance? Youtube? My buddy is an expert, and not really a teacher. I do all my own mechanical work on my cars. So I think I'll enjoy upgrading things etc.

Hybrid bike: I do think this might be the best route, but some of my trails are extremely rough, even on payment with the ground shifting. I think just changing the wheels on a mountain bike is the way to go.

Yeah, they will. You will get a feel right away between bikes, which ones feel "natural" and which ones feel twitchy/sketchy. Also, sizing you might actually prefer something different than the "suggested" size, but lean toward following the suggestion for the most part.

If you work on cars, bikes will come naturally. You tube, and some metric allen wrenches, you're good to go.

a hardtail mountain bike is usually the ticket for a first bike, but a rigid fork is way easier to "service" (you don't service it at all) than a suspension. You also might get a hella cheap suspension fork on your bike that sucks so badly that a rigid fork would be better.

Rebuilt my rear wheel yesterday. For the first time ever I erred on the side of leaving the spokes too loose as opposed to ratcheting them hella tight.

The ride quality is HNNNNNGggGg.... Wtf have I been missing? I always cranked the spokes down in the past, but leaving them with some spring absolutely revolutionizes the smoothness of the ride.

I googled to see if this was common knowledge but mostly everything I see claims that spoke tightness shouldn't effect the feel of the ride.... Which makes no sense for so many reasons. I've never used a spoke tension meter but might buy one now.

After that, I immediately went to my mountain bike and backed off each spoke nipple a half turn, can wait to see how it effects the ride on my hardtail.

I had a Straggler (same year) I ended up selling (pics are in this thread) that I never rode. Was cool but to me was a heavy road bike that you could take on trails.

That's why I have reservations, although I know it is different

Finally got my new chain ring this last week and got to go out on a ride this morning. Almost didn’t get out of bed but I am glad I did. I will need a few rides on it to really tell the difference but according to my Strava I pr’d a lot on my ride today. I also managed to drop 8 seconds on a small flowy downhill section that I have trying to get better at. That was also with my almost losing it as the end of my handle bars clipped a tree. Thankfully saved it.

If anyone uses Strava send me a pm with your info and I will send you mine. Might be cool to see what everyone is doing.

yeah, like I said DT makes great wheels but those aluminum wheels are heavy as F. I know because I have them on my CAAD12.

That bike probably weighs 19.5 lbs

More expensive bikes they assume you have pedals to transfer over or a pedal preference so they do not include them
