Movies tend to show the most extreme thing in any situation. I doubt it's the norm to beat the fuk out of your equipment, so why would you beat the fuk out of your slave who won't be very useful for weeks or maybe even months. If you have a slave that is constantly running away, why beat them when you could just sell them.

For the most part you wouldn't expect much more than an occasional whip strike for moving slow or a standard parental punishment of the time to remove a behavior. As you correctly identified making your work tool unable to work would not be a good use of resources.

They really didn't except for 'severe' offenses. Slaves were a valuable investment. And a wise businessman doesn't abuse a valuable investment. The individuals that transported them/sold them were unnecessarily cruel. But the guys actually buying them? Not as much as much as you've be led to believe.


If I remember correctly Jefferson Davis (Confederate president) gave all of his properties/businesses to one of his slaves before the war ended. Eventually he got out of prison and the former slave gave everything back to him. I think a large portion of his slaves remained on to continue to work for him/operate his businesses.


I used to lease some hunting land (Northern Louisiana) from a black family. Basically the owner deeded everything to his slaves before the war ended. Dude & his family lived the rest of their lives at their home and the former slaves continued to operate the plantation. They've held and operated the property for 158 years now and pretty much everything is still in tact.



I live deep in the agricultural South and have been in/to a lot of former plantations. Even some places that are still operating till this day that aren't really known for that kind of history. Not uncommon for these places to be black owned because the owners turned them over to the slaves with agreements for long term payments worked out. The farms/plantations that survived after the civil war needed loyal former slaves to help them do it. Otherwise it would have all been chopped up during reconstruction.

Not justifying slavery. But history books and hollywood don't portray a complete history. I've simply met too many black brahs that can attest that their land/wealth/holdings are the result of the good relationship their ancestor had with their former 'master'. And I also know some white families that have managed to maintain their wealth/standing since that era. Primarily because of the loyalty of their former slaves.



That kind of loyalty and respect can't be bought or created through abuse. But you'll never hear these stories, because they've been eliminated from history. Unless you find the direct descendant of a slave who knows their family history and is willing to talk about it. What actually happened will continue to fade and be forgotten.

I would have got them on a boat and packed them off back to Africa and hired my own kind and paid them a decent wage. And encouraged others to do the same. Imagine all the chit that continues to this day that could have been avoided. Talk about creating a rod for your own back.
