I've seen 100x more dolphins/barracudas than sharks over the years. Much more likely. Sharks are there, but odds are it isn't one.

But everyone who's saying that people would have seen the sharks right away have to remember that their vision into the darkness outside of the boat is impacted by the lighting in their direct environment.
Dark adaptations that occur in the human eye (and can take up to 20-30 minutes to adjust accordingly going from light to dark) are a non factor with a camera, so the phone probably caught more detail than what the bystanders most likely saw at the time this all went down.

EDIT: earlier I saw a tweet that maybe the kid swam away intentionally because he felt some obligation to his family.
I assumed it was a troll (cuz so stupid where to even begin?) but with all the "misctard replies" maybe guy has a point?
...yeah, his dad wanted him to go to college and he just wanted to be tradie...and rather than confront his father he decided to take a dare that allowed him to escape being a universitycel.

Once proven initially wrong, in this case, that an animal is indeed in the shot, they pivot to "ohhh but the animal your originally called out is wrong. The new animal I say it is is correct"
Its like you have to prove them wrong 4 times. Sad! But its how you know they're jabbies.

You shark idiots don’t think the witnesses would report the attack and the screams from the miscer being made a late night snack ?
Odds are infinitely more likely to have just drowned after 20 minutes of swimming than a phucking shark attack. Shark attacks are extremely rare.
