Didn't realize how important it is to eat carbs before intense training

Ate a chit ton of bread in the morning today and just finished 1 hour wrestling session, and I still had plenty of energy after a few rounds of sparring.

Last week, I was mostly eating high fat diet with minimal carbs and I gassed out after like 10 min of warm-up.

You need dem carbs for energy brahs.

How can you have a 2009 joindate and just now be figuring that carbs are good lol

Anyone who has ever actually trained intensely would tell you the same, OP.

If people say otherwise, they're either not actually pushing themselves or are still on some placebo chit.

Eh, there are many people who believe fats can be just as effective for fueling your body once your body adapts to keto diet. But that hasn't been my experience.

100%. I'm not surviving an intense wrestling training only eating protein and fats. Fuk that.

I used to think the same till i watched Michael Phelps diet in 2012, the one that got viral. Then i did a bit more research, and thats when i realized that for peak performance and muscle building, carbs are just as, if not more important than protein. Fat needs to be kept at minimum, just enough to keep your hormonal body functions going, not because its bad for you but simply to make up more room for carbs.

The best athletes in the world consume a ****ton of carbs.

These experiments have been done, and apparently assuming you went through with the obvious fat adaptation (which you did not) while on low carb you would perform the same or slightly better when it comes to endurance, and same or slightly worse when it comes to short term explosive energy,

keep in mind also that people have very different Tolerance to carbohydrates and insulin response, for some people carbs are requirement, and for some people keto is much better.

However, when it comes to your health there is no debate, someone who eats once a day wild Alaskan salmon with asparagus and a huge salad will absolutely always be healthier and live longer than someone who eats bread every day. The difference in your quality of life will also be very dramatic, on low carb you’re going to have better skin, no energy crashes or swings, less inflammation, no hunger, and so on.

Said no elite athlete/sportmans EVER lol.

The health aspect you talk about is bull**** too btw. Eating bread wont make someone unhealthier on itself, especially if that bread is helping that person improve their cardiovascular system and endurance, which is one of the most statistically important factors of predicting death/life expectancy. Find me a good cyclist/marathon runner/rower/tennis player whatever athlete that has a low carb diet and is still ranked highly.

Using steroid user and exceptional genetic elite athletes who eat Twinkies and burgers all day is probably not the smartest thing, you don’t know what the difference would be in his performance If he ate a healthier diet, you also don’t know how well his body responded to steroids, which dramatically increase performance regardless of exercise or diet, there’s just a lot of nuance that you’re not taking into account at all. You also don’t have a time machine to check how Michael Phelps is going to feel and look like when he is 60 years old.

Fat being kept to a minimum kind of flies in the face of your Michael Phelps example, as he has been well known to stuff himself with extremely high fat and very unhealthy foods.

Anecdotes like this are nothing special, I can give you an opposing anecdote, Alan Aragon was feeding an Olympic skater, and she took in one gram per pound of bodyweight in carbs, which is a very low carbohydrate diet for such an athlete, especially when compared to traditional Intakes among athletes. And when he fed Pete Sampras, because he was getting too fat, what do you think they cut? Do you think they cut protein or fat? Nope.

All athletes need carb-heavy diets because they burn so much calories. If you're a sedentary boomer like the poster above me you probably don't need carbs so yea, you should be eating salmon and asparagus for dinner. But me, i play tennis, run 5ks, lift heavy weights, swim laps. I can't function without carbs and I feel like a million bucks after a huge plate of pasta. Sleep like a king too. The very concept of "keto" makes me LOL as an athletic person.

Nobody said anything about twinkies and burgers, strong fallacious first argument lol.

Fat kept to a minimum doesnt work with phelps, because its kind of hard to eat 60 grams of fat when you need over 10k cals a day, that again is a nonsensical argument, obviously he needs to rely on fats as well. I never said calories from fat are worthless or nobody should rely on fats for energy. Again another fallacy

Athletes cutting weight is also a completely different factor, now you are arguing about something enitrely different which has nothing to do with performance or health. No **** a boxer trying to lose 10 lbs in 2 weeks is not gonna be eating "twinkies", strong argument.

And lastly, the best athletes in the world eating high carb moderate protein moderate/low fat is not "anecdotal", research the diets of pretty much every sport that relies on endurance/strenght/stamina and be surprised about how much they rely on salmon and salad brah.

That’s an insane post above, it feels like somebody writing in the year 2002, entire NBA team eat low-carb, and even keto, including some of the most famous professional athletes of the highest caliber.

And also don’t forget again that there is a lot of nuance you’re not taking into account. what has become really popular and effective, especially in the recent years is to stay very low insulin for the whole day, and then surround your work out with “targeted“ carbohydrate intake, so it’s not one or the other.

But a regular eating of bread is an indefensible position, that argument has been lost long ago and you’re simply saying what you’re saying because you like bread. Some of these elite athletes, and you like to mention elite athletes, have often described bread as the devil and so on, so you kinda have to pick your lane,

For highly intense training, yes. I started the 10K kettlebell challenge last week, which is essentially a cross between strength and cardio. Great for conditioning. Carbs make no difference for that or most HIIT workouts which are strength endurance. But for low rep heavy lifting or short bursts of energy gotta have some glycogen reserves in ya.
Yeah Buddyyy! Light weight! Light weight baby!!!!

Hold on, now you’re not being honest, you specifically mentioned Michael Phelps and high carbohydrate intake, but Michael Phelps also takes in enormous amount of unhealthy fats, how do you know his performance is a direct result of his carbohydrate intake, and not his fat intake?

"Entire NBA team on keto, highest caliber athletes on the world on keto". Care to name some examples? Im highly curious, and if you come with proof that there are TONS of high caliber athletes relying on keto or low carb diets, ill gladly stand corrected and grant you the argument. So please, post all these examples of high caliber world class athletes on keto/low carb. Hopefully you wont post athletes trying to make a certain weight class, or bodybuilders preparing for a show lol.

Anybody saying bread is the devil is also a retard btw.

Use your brain now. Does this seem like a diet that is focusing on eating FATS over any other macronutrient?

Now, does that diet has high amount of fat, compared to the average diet? Well yes, of course, again, using common sense, it would be hard to eat over 12k cals of food while keeping the calories from fat low. Eating that much volume would be nearly impossible without the aid of the most calorie dense macronutrient aka fats. Remember i never said fats were the devil, the main point is that a diet highly in carbs will result in better athletic performance than a diet low in carbs, which was what you said in the first place.

Sodium + easy digesting carbs + some caffeine is GOAT before working out

Noodles or rice will digest easier than bread or pasta OP. Ramen and an energy drink is a god tier preworkout meal

Op there is a balance.
Ideally you eat the carbs the night before for the next training session because if you eat too much the day of the race, contest, competition then the carbs hold the water/fluid and bloat you before training.
You also feel full while exercising.
My trick was meat fried race the day before and a mini snickers at about 40 minutes into training for a slight boost.

Timing is extremely important as well. Id say meal timing depends entirely on your digestion and routine. Check this absolute beast of a kid that is known for eating 7k cals of pasta and pizza everyday at night and thats it. Absolutely no other calorie during the day and he trains like 8 hours a day too lol

No doubt I started to up my carbs (whole grain English muffins, sweet potatoes) when I felt my workouts lacking srs

Keeping them on a tight watch though because I can easily over do it with the carb food

For boxing and wrestling, yes you need carbs.

Glycogen is more efficient for energy that fat for sprinting, boxing, etc....

For steady state cardio (biking, running, etc) you can get away with keto.

I'm on a keto diet now, I run in the morning on an empty stomach after having a little coffee. But if I sprinted I'm sure I would do poorly compared to if I was carbed up.

Agree with the timing comments in this thread. Most people eat way too many carbs for their activity level though.

Carbohydrates fuel the body, if a starving man who hadn’t eaten in nine days was presented with a huge bowl of mashed potatoes and a huge plate of tri-tip, he would devour the mashed potatoes without even looking at the steak.
Exercise will get you through times of ill health better than no exercise will get you through times of good health.

Carbs after workout maybe. Eating anything before a workout is miserable.

keep in mind also that people have very different Tolerance to carbohydrates and insulin response, for some people carbs are requirement, and for some people keto is much better.

The longest living population on the Earth, the Japanese, eat very low fat. Just omega 3s from fish really, but mainly protein and carbs. The shortest living population on Earth, the eskimos, have the highest fat diet on Earth
