Struggled hard on my ride this weekend. Just couldn't get the lead out, my breathing was shallow. Had a few moments where everything just gelled and it felt so fuarking good! Those moments had that mid-season form feeling which was great.

I googled to see if this was common knowledge but mostly everything I see claims that spoke tightness shouldn't effect the feel of the ride.... Which makes no sense for so many reasons. I've never used a spoke tension meter but might buy one now.

After that, I immediately went to my mountain bike and backed off each spoke nipple a half turn, can wait to see how it effects the ride on my hardtail.
I will caution - I had a custom rear built (new hub - DT Swiss spokes - OEM rim) for my road bike and the spokes were too loose. Anyway, bike felt great - took it for a long ride and when I crossed a RR crossing it made the wheel wobble in sweeping turns (actually felt like lateral suspension) - then 10 miles or so later the wheel was so wobbly that the bike was unridable.

Took it back into the shop and he pulled out the tension meter and got everything into spec and havent had a single issue since.

Shimano SPD-SL for road bike shoes (what I have - Sidi Carbon). I don't stop when I go for rides, but in general I prefer road shoes.

Is there anything better than sunrise?

Been starting my rides at 4:00am-4:30am range... First light is at 4:45, so I ring it in on my bike.

pure HNNGGGGGGGGG

Arizona sunrise/sunsets are arguably the best on earth. Can confirm.

My mountain bike has been set up single speed for a long time. I want to start pedaling to the trails, but using a single mountain gear ratio is absolute misery on the road. I have a 11-36 10 speed cassette; I just need to buy a shifter and I'll be good to go.

My mountain bike has become such a hodge-podge of old parts. I have a SRAM front brake, a Shimano rear brake, silver spokes in back, black spokes in front, grips are very old with no bar ends, pins are missing from the pedals, the seat rails are bent. I did a very amateur paint job on it recently; I'd grade my work a 5/10 LOL. The more "bootleg" the bike becomes, the more I like it.

LMAO.

I love Sam Pilgrim. He's the only MTB youtuber I watch consistently.

Bought it for $550 (scratch & dent, crazy sale).

Recent snap of my pedal off a 4ft huck at 50-year trail system in Catalina. (all fixed now, new pedals came in yesterday, lol)

Went out riding this morning.

Hitting RMR tomorrow morning again.

Their stuff is expensive because they don't sell a bunch of CHYNA bullchit. Unlike virtually every retailer, they do quality control on the stuff they sell.

If you work on cars, bikes will come naturally. You tube, and some metric allen wrenches, you're good to go.

a hardtail mountain bike is usually the ticket for a first bike, but a rigid fork is way easier to "service" (you don't service it at all) than a suspension. You also might get a hella cheap suspension fork on your bike that sucks so badly that a rigid fork would be better.
I've been on 5 longer rides with my REI Co-op bike. So much fun! Feeling stronger already, so I'm carrying a lot more speed, and I'll need more safety equipment. Seems like it could be really easy to find gravel around a sharp turn, rear kicks out and my knee would smack a tree at 10-15mph.

So far I've replaced the pedals, cut the bar 1.5" on each side due to wrist pain, added soft grips, and a chain guard cuz it smacks the frame pretty good, but I need a different one, because I can still hear it. Prob need a thick silicone one. The hydraulic brakes are damn impressive. Impressed with the bike too. It's quite smooth and can handle curbs and jumps with ease. One issue I have is not staying straight on the jumps. I prob need to slow down and work on form for everything.

Picked up a backpack for hiking, but it's been great on rides as well. There's like a 2-3 inch gap that you can't see, allows for great airflow and sits on the back nice. Osprey makes such good $hit.

Thanks for helping me out with my concerns and questions.

IF I was a gravel rider, I'd invest in lightweight, breathable elbow and knee pads. I have lots of buddies who are gravel riders. #1 injury is road rash. Barreling down @ 30mph on kitty litter and turning, and they wash out the front, sliding for like 15 ft. Kness and elbow become ground beef.

I've been mountain biking for 12 years now, and I never wear knee pads. I've had one bad injury on my knee from a crash, but gear-minimalism is important to me. Helmet only - no gloves/pads/chamois/etc. I don't even wear MTB specific shorts anymore because they're too heavy/hot. Board shorts for me.

You will find that your technique of holding the handlebars is most important as it relates to pains you have.

This is also true for saddle pain.

Fatigue leads to bad technique, which leads to pain.
One issue I have is not staying straight on the jumps. I prob need to slow down and work on form for everything.
Put your seat ALL THE WAY DOWN when practicing jumps. I'm assuming you don't have a dropper post, so you need to manually push your seat down into the bike as low as it possibly can go if you're jumping. A dropper post would be a great next upgrade if you really enjoy aggressive riding & jumping.

Yeah I never bring a pack anymore because it's cumbersome IMO. I do the camelbak fanny pack with a water bottle in it. Phone/keys/wallet/spare tube/tire levers go in the fanny pack, then I have 25oz water bottle on my frame, and 20oz water bottle in my fanny pack. Even if I do a 45+ mile ride, I just bring 45oz of water, and plan to stop at a convenience store to refill if needed.

Brake BEFORE the turn, release and carry your speed through the turn. If you do find you're braking in the turn, modulate (feather) the brakes. You'll have to use more rear.

Lean the bike into the turn, have your weight distributed between front and rear wheel. Weight too forward, you may wash out the front. Weight too rearward, you dun f'd up, can't turn tighter, and may wash out the front due to lack of weight on front.

Rear = slow.
Front = stop.
Handful of front and rear is emergency stop, hopefully you're going straight.

'sup bicycle thread brahs.

Just a quick question for more experienced riders.

I'm thinking about purchasing a bike literally just to bike to/from the gym. It is exactly 1.2 miles each way - not far at all in terms of distance or theoretical biking time.

Is there *any* reason at all I should buy a 'good' bike for this purpose? Or should I just get the first thing that fits my size on FB marketplace?

Again, just gonna use it to ride to/from the gym, nothing more.

I'm only fully kitted out at downhill bike parks (Full-face, gloves, elbow and knees).

For more everyday riding here in AZ desert trails, Just regular helmet and gloves. Sweaty palms makes me hold the grips tighter thus causes fatigue and numbness. I also once busted my hand open on a rock catching myself from falling off a cliff, so now gloves all the time. Half finger for summer, full finger in winter.

For hydration, I go for the hip sack (fanny packs) WITH bladder (2liters min. in desert). I don't do frame mounted water bottles because I keep losing them bombing downhill. I want to look into FIDLOCK water bottles , but pricey.

I don't do GPS mounts simply because I cannot afford one. Phone goes into my pocket or bag, all I need.

Depends on budget.
For $500, I like this one
https://www.canyon.com/en-us/mountai...on-5/2613.html

Anything under $500, yeah, used market.

If you truly don't want to ride any trails, get a road bike. I like MTB for commuting simple because it's more versatile, and more comfy than road. Slower than a road bike, but if you're only riding under 5 miles, who cares. TIme will be the difference in just minutes.

Meh. On road, if you're going to get hit, it's from the rear or side, or cut you off coming from the rear, and you fly over the rear of the car. You'll be knocked over and flown, chances camera catches anything is minimal.

Saying that, gopro is cool when sending it down trails.

A folding bike for short distance is the perfect bike
Yeah my ride would be 1.2 miles of paved sidewalk, minimally-walked by pedestrians. Nothing intense, no hills, nothing.

Basically just saving myself some gas money and using the ride itself as my warmup rather than doing some time on the rower when I get to the gym.

I mean honestly I'm really looking at used under 200 bucks - very cheap, as long as it doesn't fall apart from being ridden 4ish times per week for 2.4 total miles lol.

Nothing wrong with folding bikes.. but they are specific for a purpose, space saving.

Srs, the people I know who use a folding bike using it for partial commutes to work, and then store their bikes in the office. THey drive to a parking lot, then pull the bike out of their trunk, ride the rest of the distance to work, then fold up the bike and store it in their office.

When I was a wage slave, parking downtown was pricey a month, and this was a solution for some. After like 4 months, it paid for itself.

If that's not your situation, I'd go with a traditional bike. Just more comfy, and comfort means you'll be on two wheels more.
I'm not blessed with riches, but I am rich with blessings.
Thank you, LORD, my God.
