No, it's not media hype. My entire company on a global scale has frozen ALL new hires and rescinded some job offers. In a few months we're going to be letting go of the temps as wells.


What's really fu/cked up is that we keep advertising job openings but have ZERO intentions of hiring anyone. The managers do this as a way to fill up their calendars with pointless meetings while not actually doing any damn work.

I've been in interviews where the candidate is dressed sharp, speaks well and earnestly wants to get hired. And we tell them all sorts of stuff like:

"you're a phenominal candidate, let me schedule a 2nd round interview with our VP of Whatever so they can meet you. I'm sure they'll all LOVE you."



Now imagine doing 2 or 3 rounds of interviews and being told "wow, you're a great candidate", and then being told, sorry, we're holding off on hiring for now. This is a cruel practice by lazy managers, VPs and directors who just want to waste time and not do any actual work.

These are uncertain times. The one thing you don't want to be is a lone wolf, you're not gonna be able to survive on your own. You need family (and maybe a few close friends you can trust).


I suggest you strengthen your relationships with family and friends.

If you work in the semi-conductor industry then I can believe it, but every other industry is suffering.

I learned my lesson last recession. I've spent the last 10 years or so basically recessionproofing my career. Usually the volume of business slows down so they tend to hang on to key people and tie up the loose ends. So basically, you'll find they become more strict with their policies and give less chances. When hiring people they will be more selective and they don't have to offer as much.

So basically, make sure your certifications, licenses, training and all other factors in your job are up to date. Be sure to be good at your job. Make sure you aren't violating any policies, be on time, don't leave early, don't call out a lot. Don't do things that disrupt the business or make them not want you around. Working for big corporations it's the worst when recessions hit.
