There are a few reasons, some noble, some not-so-noble.

Ethnic Russians make up most of Crimea and Donbas. Ukraine has been persecuting them for years, so Putin used this as the "reason" with his own people for invading these areas. Despite what US and Ukrainian propaganda say about Putin wanting to take the whole country, the specific point of this war was to take Donbas and the southeastern region of Ukraine, and to keep Ukraine from joining NATO by pulling them into an indefinite conflict.

NATO never really considered allowing Ukraine to join before because of the fact that they were one of the most corrupt nations on the planet.

Some funny business happened in 2019 where Ukraine was covering for the Bidens, specifically that crackhead Hunter. I think Putin was thinking with Biden in office, along with the puppet Zelensky taking office, that the ties between the US and Ukraine were improving to the point where NATO would considering letting Ukraine join, so it put him in a position where he had to start a conflict. The whole "save ethnic Russians" was just an excuse to appease the people of Russia.

I'm sure the "protection of Russian people" is part of it, but these regions also provide a strategic advantage for Russia when it comes to their defense, not to mention the land is very rich in natural resources.

The aggressive NATO expansion is really a major reason for Russia wanting this land, and also other land as well.

The real ******* in this war is Biden, and more specifically, that warmonger Blinken. The US wants this to go on for as long as possible to enrich the military industrial complex and weaken Russia. One of those is a noble cause, the other, not so much. They have also been accused of pushing it too far with this proxy war, and I tend to agree.

What's hilarious to me is that if you say both sides are asshats, you're labeled as a Russian supporter. I've found that in situations where you have to "pick a side", the evil side is usually the one that declares the neutral parties an enemy.

At the end of the day, Russia will end up taking and securing the southeastern region of Ukraine, and we'll all forget about it in 5 years in a way similar to what happened in Crimea. That is if the US doesn't push Russia to the point where they start dropping tactical nukes. I don't think that's going to happen, because Russia has pretty much achieved their objectives, despite what fake US news and Ukrainian propaganda say.
