As a young kid I wanted to be a veterinarian because I loved animals especially dogs. Grew out of that by my teenage years (still love dogs tho).

As a high school kid I wanted to be a rapper first (and I was actually good at it) but as far as a traditional career path I was focused on either an urban planner or an architect. I bought a bunch of books about the subject and self-educated, used to literally study zoning codes in my spare time (srs). I just found the subject incredibly interesting and dreamt of becoming a top economic developer in my city.

Unfortunately I decided not to go to college and it’s basically impossible to break into the field without a bachelors, so tours over for that dream. But it’s a lot of politics and bullchit anyway, takes 5 years of jumping through hoops and securing funding just to get a project approved that may or may not even get built. I think I like the idea more than I’d like actually doing the job. Seems like a headache.

I probably should have dropped out of high school and immediately gone to trade school, attained expertise in building and networked with other tradies to form a development firm. Then I would’ve been able to achieve my dream without traditional college.

Sadly what I actually do for a living today is bullchit auditing/data entry office misery that pays $40k per year.

Lots of kids make plans and have dreams man. They don't see it as wage slavery lol

Found out game testers may play a single level hundreds of times to find a bug, so lost interest.

Figured game development would be extremely hard. When I got into tech, realized that’s not always the case, but game devs are severely underpaid to other SWEs and often taken advantage of by being worked to the bone to meet deadlines

When I was a very young lad I wanted to be a professional baseball player. Then as a young teenager I wanted to be a professional skateboarder. It went wrong when I wasn't good enough. I should have kept playing baseball instead of skateboarding. I would have had a better shot at pro baseball player because that chit is easy. Still probably wouldn't have been one though.

Damn!!!!!!!! Good for you studying for fun. You should find something else you like and get back into studying. There's a better job out there for you for sure.

Emergency response, Firefighter primarily. I was a volunteer firefighter and EMR on a small town service for a number of years working towards it when I was 17-19.

It was during the big recession in the 90s so there was a lot of hiring freezes and retirement buy-outs on local forces and it was looking like years before I could get in so I moved on.

I wanted to draw/write cartoons like Charles Shultz or Shel Silverstein.

I wouldn't say it went wrong. I've written a few books and my profession isn't really all that different from children's book author.

And I might very well still write a few kids books when the opportunity arises.

Thanks bro. I had a lot of naïvety about career prospects and being able to escape the matrix in the first half of my 20s. I knew from day one of W2 work at 18 years old that it would not be for me. I’ve tried a number of things, but the last couple years have beaten the chit outta me and I’ve honestly damn near given up on dreaming (srs).

Maybe someday tho. We’re all gonna make it, right?

For a short while it was to be an airplane pilot. When much younger one of our neighbors was a commercial pilot, who took dad and I up in his small plane he owned. He let me take control of the plane. I was probably 10 years old at the time and I was hooked.

Then as i grew older I found I didn't care to fly all that much.

I saw Rockstar for a few examples. Okay, constantly touring on the road, you got a flu, you still got to go out there and perform. It's 102° out there, with swamp ass humidity? Gotta go out there and perform.

Got really good grades in HS...top 5% of class of 370 ..........Got to college and went off the deep end. Was on academic probation my 1st year. lost all scholarships, lost all motivation and discipline, barely graduated after switching majors 5 times and only landing on the one that I did because I was 2 classes away from that Degree in my 5th year. Had on direction, no real guidance, no real ambition.

FF to today...I've done well for myself after floundering around for 8 years after college in dead end office jobs. Got on a good career path in 2014 and have ridden it to where I am today. I don't love what I do but it pays great and affords me the ability to do the things that I DO love.

Currently hitting the 2nd "deep look" at the future and really starting to toss around the idea of a career change again.

I wanted to be a clinical psychologist but grad school wasn't an option for me, or at least I didn't think it was. I still have interest in it because I'm such a good listener so still may end up pursuing being a mental health counselor. Ended up going the banking route instead for more security but that idea has aged poorly somewhat. Looking back, being a psychologist would've worked out perfectly especially with all the diversity & inclusion going on. I think back then I had doubts about my race playing a factor but lo & behold 10 yrs later it would become an asset in that kind of liberal field. Would be pretty hard to put up with liberal office politics though.Should've just tried to become a musician srs. I know it's looked down upon a lot but the other day I was thinking about how rappers (especially back then) had blind ambition going after lofty goals at 17 or 18. Didn't even think twice about a backup plan or anything. Obviously there are a lot more that don't make it but part of that probably has to do with everyone around you telling you you can't. I also think trades are looked down upon especially if you have a lot of white collar mentors/adults around you. Overall, adults need to stop forcing kids into traditional office jobs and BS like that.

This is very true. You don't get to pick and choose which parts of it either.

In my 20s I put a lot of time outside of my job into fashion photography, I had no aspirations to make it my actual job (I'm a realist) but thought it would be an amazing if you could. This was until I met a few I rented studios from and their entire day was hustling, cold calling, dealing with flakey people just to shoot boring af stuff that actually pays the bills. An editorial in a fashion magazine actually pays fuk all and is just marketing for boring commerical work which everyone is scrapping for as the pie gets smaller and smaller. Some annoying af clueless art director will be on set when you shoot to telling what to do too.

There started to be some behind the scenes videos released by pros with some profile then also and their problems were not much different to my problems except they never knew when their next paycheck would come and despite being a 'name' they lived like students in their 30s.
