This, 100%. After 45, I've lifted to stay in shape. Too much stress to try ORMs or anything like that when you're old. I just stick to 5x5 working sets now.

I go in waves to maintain motivation. I may do months of lighter things in the 8-12 range, then get bored and chase numbers with a strength program.

Currently on 5/3/1. I never really go for actual 1rm.
I'm back, bitches!

Yea I'm quitting all heavy lifting today srs. Realized my lifts aren't even going to significantly increase unless I bloatmaxx hard at this point. No point in lifting heavy anymore. Just pumping iron bodybuilder style

Are you could come to the dark side of lifting.....

In all seriousness, proper research, common sense, and proper monitoring its not even the dark side

"heavy" is relative. My heavy is different that yours. I still lift about the same weights, but don't pursue heavier anymore; just incorporate more drop/strip sets.

Can confirm, the heavier I lift, the more injuries I accrue. Especially being mid-40's.

Shoulder strain or tear or whatever is now keeping me from doing much at all. Going to lower the weight and raise reps to avoid becoming a stumpy bloatlord, king of the manlets with multiple tendon/muscle injuries.

Prefer to keep it to the 8-15 rep range. Feels much better and you get that sweet burn. Never enjoyed heavy lifting, don't care about numbers either

Like for bench I keep it to 135-155lbs and just do tons of reps. I can feel it more in my muscles, and it doesn't feel like Im over stressing my CNS

Said it in another thread recently. The only people who actually care about numbers and the like are the <1% bloatlords and the hardos.

Do you look like you lift at all or go to a gym a couple times a week? Yes? Then outside of that no one really cares. Go work out, do what works for you, but focus less on 1rm numbers. Ive seen plenty of smaller/skinnier/twinkier guys than me throw up bigger numbers and i just dont care anymore.

Jelly of yall that can just mosey into the gym, do 3 sets of 8-12 on a handful of lifts and call her a day, after day, after day, after day....

Chasing numbers and PRs has always been the only thing that kept me in the gym, but hopefully one day I'll find myself content with easy mode

I get that. I'm not chasing numbers, but I started doing strongman comps and I enjoy that so I lift heavy so that I don't zero out on any events come comp day.

Or maybe some of us work the muscle until it's maxed and exhausted.

Never did care ever since i started lifting 17 years ago. It's the most pointless ego based thing that has never made sense to me.

Lifting heavy is dumb af for aesthetics all your doing is destroying your CNS and increasing risk of injury.

Well to be clear, I know what I can lift on the free weights. As I work my way up to a failure set, I know where I should be. If I can't hit the norm, I figure it's sleep, food, stress. If it becomes a trend I do stress out. this is usually only on my 1st exercise, the rest are pump/flex sets.

I think lifting heavy is a subjective term. It depends on who is saying it.

For example, benching 75-80lb dumbbells may be heavy to some but not others. The one it isn't heavy to will say that isn't heavy.

But overall, I feel your point OP. I've been stuck at some measly numbers on all core lifts and I don't give a chit anymore. When those memories come up on my phone from 2 years ago and I'm still pushing the same weights, im like fuark man damn I suck. Program sucks. Time to change stuff up, but then I realize hey as long as I am still putting in the work, feel good, look good then that is all that matters. I guess I am maintaining while coping simultaneously lol

I enjoy the ego boost and test or challenge every few months to let me know that, "i still got it" but usually i mess up a joint.
I screwed up an old left shoulder injury fkn around with heavy inclines; so it is just not worth it to me any longer.

I would love to still lift heavy.

At the sametime I am pushing 40 with bad shoulders and a bad back.

I am trying to manage lifting and BJJ. I still haven't found a balance, but longevity is my goal.

I hate when someone starts asking me questions about lifting because they see that I lift. I ask them their goals, and then tell them to be sure to lift heavy enough to ensure they are challenging themselves.

Their response is always, I don't want to lift heavy, I don't want to get all big. I'm like "bruh, you're not going to turn into Ronnie Coleman in a couple months, much less a couple of years" lol

Yes, without an MRI machine it is impossible to tell a buff person from a fat person.

Here's the secret:

Get aesthetic and learn how to do 1 arm pull ups

Nothing else will matter. These two combined will mog any "strength lift"
