Trieste was able to go even further than the Titanic since it was built out of steel and titanium(5 inches thick of steel bb)

The control system wasn't a problem. The main problem was the way the hull was built and the materials used. Water pressure is the number one killer of deep sea dives, not cheap controllers.

The carbon fiber hull wasn't properly tested enough to see how many trips it could take before failure. Since it was a small company, I think they simply didn't have the budget for the test.

They have to pluck these things out of the water and haul them around all the time.

Much smaller boat, smaller crane, smaller trailer, can use a regular tradie truck tow vehicle. I see the appeal, but obviously bad bad idea.

Well I pointed out that you can cheap on many things and still be fine.

A game controller to steer a sub doesn't mean its unsafe.

Not a chance. There is no gradual failure when the outside pressure is 6000 PSI.

Carbon fiber is insanely strong depending on how its laid up. You also have to factor in manufacturability. Whats easier to manufacture? A titanium tube wound in carbon fiber, or somehow getting your hands on a 2ft thick titanium tube?

They already use carbon fiber wound steel tanks in the aerospace industry for holding things like rocket propellant. The boeing jet you fly on is also a pressurized aluminum tube wrapped in carbon fiber



I think the problem here is that they obviously didn't lay it up right lmfao. Im not an engineer, but the fiber would be great if there was internal pressure pushing out rather than external pressure pushing in.

A good way to picture it would be to think about pulling some zipties on your wrist apart. Very difficult. The inverse of that is telling someone to squeeze a looped zip tie. Very easy. You could drop a forklift on that rocket tank and it would be crushed to shreds. Try driving a forklift out of that tank.

Different needs for different environments and stress loads.

Picture a cylinder wrapped in fiber, carbon or other. The fiber is resisting expansion of the cylinder because that will try to stretch the fiber. But for inward pressure the fiber isn't doing anything, it will just fold on itself.
