It's it necessary to store bitcoin on a cold wallet?
like If I'm invest <10k
can't it just sit in the brokerage account on kraken
paying more fees to withdraw it, upload it, sell it
seems like a PITA to put it on some usb wallet even if the government outlaws it you will have no where to cash it in legally or illegally without the feds cracking on your ass once you end up with the proceeds

If it's under $10k, and you really don't want to be bothered with self-custody, you'd probably be fine leaving it on a large, legitimate US-based exchange like Coinbase, Gemini, Kraken, Robinhood, etc.
If you have a significant amount, planning to HODL, and have concerns if an exchange may have their assets frozen by regulators, get hacked, etc., you would be better off storing it on your own cold storage wallet. It also helps that you reduce the outstanding supply on exchanges, which in time helps drive up price.
Not your keys, not your coins is str8 faccs, homie.
