Never ever take advice from women. Just ignore them. Life becomes so much better when you can filter out all the riff raff.

Funny how it's ok for them to give us advice, but the other way around it's considered toxic and misogyny.

I am a male therapist dealing mostly with men in my practice so I thought I'd chime in.

My main sources of issues with guys is addiction (especially things like porn and gambling), trauma from various things, ADHD, and relationship/sexual issues. It's not always guys crying about things or feeling depressed, a lot of them have legit disorders and just need to navigate things. And yes, I always advocate exercise, improving their social lives and finding a community. Sometimes they just need a totally non-judgemental ear - I'm not a friend or anything like that, I try to dig down to find sources of issues they are going through so they can resolve them.

For example, I have a group that I teach about social anxiety - trying to get them out of the house and less useless with women and other people. It's all progressed and graded and we set goals for the end of the sessions. Things like depression, etc. almost always have a source behind them.

Thank you for getting into psychotherapy. One of my hugest gripes is that it is female dominated and it is expected that we express our emotionality in a feminine manner, but that's unrealistic. Therefore I find that much of the therapy doesn't serve men and ultimately tries to change them in an unrealistic manner. I think if we see more diversity of therapist (age, race, gender) then it would serve people more.

Only about 15% of therapy participants are men and only about 10% of therapists are men until you get into doctorate level people. So there's a definite need for a male influence in the profession. Tons of guys out there grew up without any male influences at all.

It's an easy way to throw the responsibility on someone else. If therapy works for you, you could have reached the same conclusion without therapy.
When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

Im not 100% sure on this but ive always been under the impression female therapists tend to be more affirming rather than objective with therapy. I think it's one of the reasons a lot of modern women have that "I'm not a bitch-- I'm just opinionated!" kind of mentality about their own shortcomings. Female therapists tell them what the patient wants to hear rather than what they need to hear because you shouldn't invalidate someone. Male therapists are more focused on results even if it's a bitter pill to swallow for the patient

Ive noticed there does seem to be a different world of help and self-help between men and women, overall. I've been kind of a broken record about this before, but I've noticed a real disparity between self-help books for men vs self-help books for women.

Jocko Willink, Jordan Peterson, Robert Greene, etc say "if you want to succeed, take ownership, be a leader, you are accountable for yourself, you MUST do x, y, and z."

Women who write self-help books have silly names like Kassie Kaye or Mackenzlee Scott-Peters (always hyphenated) and write about nonsense things like "How I learned to declutter my life and SHINE!" and other odd metaphysical things like maintaining positive auras for a better you. The kinds of things that don't really translate to anything substantial or directly useful in life. They just sound pretty and make you feel like you are doing something.

At the end of the day the woman feels better about herself without having to go through any pains of admitting shortcomings or owning up to any toxic behaviors or attitudes. That's why they love therapy so much. At least in my opinion, lol

People oversell therapy as a mental health panacea. "Oh, just go take 2 therapies bro, you'll be good."

Real talk - psychologists don't know what the fuk they're doing half the time.

The correlation coefficients that prove effectiveness in psychology papers is closer to fuzzy social-science fields like economics. An r^2 of 0.2 is a very good psychology paper, and that means about 20% of the variability in X is correlated to Y. Hard-science papers usually can't get published with an r^2 that low, their standard is like 0.6 to 0.8.

Then psychology experiments are often limited by small sample sizes, because the controls on their experiments are similar to the ones in medical trials (and should be). What you end up with is deriving weak conclusions from small data, and then that broscience gets painted over as "Trust The Science" gospel.

-------------------------------------

I'm going to go off on a tangent here, and give an example of the problem by trashing two things that misc hates. Shrinks, and trannies.

The normal standard of tranny care for adolescents is known as the Dutch protocol. Basically, it's talk therapy to determine if you've been long term dysphoric or not --> puberty blockers if you are, to give you more time to think about hacking your dick off --> hacking your dick off if you're still good with it. That's "The Science".

The studies undergirding the Dutch Protocol were tracking 70 kids about 30 years ago. It's a very small sample, very dated, and the methodology of the original studies wasn't that rigorous (they didn't follow up with everyone and lost about 10 or 20 kids in between publications). They're sort of chitty papers.

It was groundbreaking at the time, and it kind of persisted for 20 years because no one else really researched trannies at all. Trannies were rare enough that no one else cared, so nothing better came along to supplant that procedure. But when the number of kids seeking tranny treatment goes up 2000% in 10 years... the Dutch studies aren't really solid enough papers to carry that kind of weight.

For example, virtually every one of these thousands of kids who started puberty blockers, ended up going on to shoot up hormones and hack their dick off. Is the Dutch "pause to think" puberty blocker step really valid any more, when no kid ever changes their mind?

It's an important question, because the California school system is throwing puberty blockers at children without their parents' consent based on the those studies. And they only covered a football team sized group of kids 30 years ago.

I'm not against therapy but I don't think most people need it and instead of paying a person to listen to you every week I think a man's time would be best served by doing an activity with friends, loved ones, or finding a fulfilling hobby.
I would guess they just don't know any better. Don't remember the specific source or post, but I know I dropped it here. Convo about men and mental health and they talked about how men relate differently and get more from a less direct/more group oriented style of therapy. Side by side instead of face to face. Said the primary model for mental health treatment fits women better for some of the reason mentioned ITT re:status and competition between men.

Not everyone has a friend to turn to. And I think there is value in having a neutral party to help you understand what is going on who doesn't have their own agenda/no stake in the outcome.

IME there is some truth to this. Over my life I've had both male and female therapists. The first ones were in my teens [parent's divorce] and second ones my own stuff.

I would say that the women were more validating and less confrontational than the men. The last male therapist who I worked with very briefly was very action oriented. I'm not sure how helpful it was as far as learning anything, but there was a definite framework or checklist feel.

- last time we talked about this
- how did that go/how is that going
- what's happening now
- here is the plan until we check in again

And 90% of the time his feedback was what I already had in mind myself. But I guess it was nice to talk to someone and to have a little structure.

Highly believable. Suppose you are aware how weak the evidence is supporting SSRIs.

Right? How nuts is it that this practice has continued for so long and that some states are seeking to deeply entrench it into their legal framework? Threatening to take children from their parents if the parents don't affirm the child's chosen gender? It's literal insanity IMO...psychotic loss of contact with the reality of the damage being done to the children.

In Europe it is being rolled back.

They think men arenโ€™t committing to women due to โ€œemotional unavailabilityโ€, or trauma lol.
"The flowers bloom, then wither... The stars shine and one day become extinct. This earth, the sun, the galaxies and even the big universe, someday will be destroyed. Compared with that, the human life is only a blink, just a little time. In that short time - people are born, laugh, cry, fight, are injured, feel joy, sadness, hate someone, love someone. All in just a moment. And then, are embraced by the eternal sleep called death."

I think only two women said i needed therapy because i was so "controlling".

both seemed to think it was ok for them to hang out at their guy friend's house alone at night watching movies while not wanting me to hang out with a group of married friends and single women from my group.

lol.

Just lol. It goes with what I and others have said that therapists are there to affirm female nature. She wants you to go to therapy because to her "therapy" is "a professional will tell you I'm right"

Unbiased as they don't know or care about the specific parties involved at the start, but...

1. They hear only one side of the story.
2. They, like everyone, have their own biases. Think a feminazi lady is every going to say that maybe the husband was correct? Nope, they just project their opinions on the client and present it as neutral. Especially if its a woman shrink, since most women just run on emotion anyway.

I'm less than a year out of a serious long term relationship. One of my closest mentors have told me you THINK you may be ready for another relationship but you're not and you need to heal.

I don't know if I told everyone what went down the past two arguments with it but it wasn't pretty and I could honestly say the first 5 - 6 months I was dealing with the trauma (may be overused word) from that. In the meantime I have loved ones who need me, friends, etc and I'm dating but I'm not going to rush into something if it doesn't fit me.

Some of my peers are either unmarried or on their second marriage. Had I lived in one place my entire life I would have been married but I moved around a lot due to my parents, started a few things late in my life but I'm where I need to be for what I want in life. Amor Fati.

Maybe I'm just a POS but I think Men should learn to suck it up and deal with their problems rather than being little bitches. Everyone is different though so therapy can be a good option for some males depending on their situation. I think talking about issues with friends who are willing to lend an ear is a better route though since you have a relationship with them already rather than a random therapist, ya know?

You keep bringing this up.

I'm actually heading to my daughter's school in about an hour to watch her perform in an airband. And hosted her friends' birthday party in my theatre room on the weekend. They watched Captain Marvel. Yeah, they are horribly abandoned.

They know that therapists are women. They use whatever information the man gives them later on against the men.

They figure that a man will open up more to a professional so they will have that much juicier information to exploit against him.

They have no actual interest in the guys mental health. They just want some leverage.

Plus , if a guy is wimpy enough to fall for it he most likely will be bearing his soul to is woman anyway which always puts her in a position of power.

Woman are basically like mini corrupt prison guards.
"To be a warrior is not a simple matter of wishing to be one. It is rather an endless struggle that will go on to the very last moment of our lives. Nobody is born a warrior, in exactly the same way that nobody is born an average man. We make ourselves into one or the other."-- Carlos Castaneda
