I was reading Black Flag of the North by Victor Suthren, about Bartholomew Roberts. I'm only 4 chapters in but there were quite a few passages about why piracy appealed to young men. Obviously there were many factors but among them was essentially having little to no way to advance socially or economically and feeling that the system was rigged against them by the ruling class. They saw an opportunity to check out and live life on their own terms and at the same time get some revenge on the world.

It was eerily similar, especially when you see the stats about young men not looking for jobs, etc. You can argue that it didn't end well for them but that's from an outsider's viewpoint. They didn't have illusions on how their lives as pirates would end and still felt that was a better option. A short life but a merry one as the saying goes. Makes you think.
