Difference is all other popular loans (car/business/home) can be wiped out through bankruptcy.

I actually have no problem with Student loan debt being allowed in bankruptcy. I do think that if it was a loan funded through the government and not private, then the school that got the money should be on the hook for some of it.

Because they were mostly 18 years old and stupid. What the loan is for is worth a fraction of what they payed, and the kicker is they're the only loans you can't declare bankruptcy on. It's why tuition is like 60k a year at some schools. These are almost no-risk loans for the lenders, and the sky's the limit for raising tuition because of easy access to this loan money.

This bailout would have been for these lenders anyway, but unlike other bailouts it might have helped regular people just a tiny bit, without fixing the underlying problem at all.

If this is true, so be it. We don't need a RINO just to try to win (or be allowed to win, so 81 gorillion doesn't happen again). It's a lose-lose situation if this is true.

perhaps instead of worrying about advanced calculus 8...schools should be teaching these scholars the basics of money management?

Variable (instead of a fixed) interest rate that fluctuates with the economy? Injury or illness?

...or they got a degree in women's studies and now works as a barista at 36 years old while still living with their parents.

But of course, it's more convenient to attack the later.

Why not just cheapen college?

Better yet, if it's so expensive, why no skip college a couple years? No attendance = lower prices.

mountains of debt that can't be paid by young person because of injury or illness...what percentage of unplayable debt does this population make up? 1%?

If they wanted to forgive loans, they should have put it through congress during his first 2 years. That's how things are supposed to work: congress controls the purse strings.

Themechanismhe was trying to use was unconstitutional. The president doesn't just get to spend loads of money without approval from congress. Look at Trump and "the wall".

1% of the 40 million student loan borrowers is 400k people. Thats almost the size of the entire population of Wyoming. And it's the size of most midsized cities.

Hell yeah. I can’t wait to give more money to the elites who influence all laws in this nation instead. In fact, I donate my entire check to the 1% because maybe if I’m lucky they’ll hand me a pair of their worn bootstraps and let me into their club.

I’m super glad my taxes helped bailout banks, and airlines, and hundreds of millions of dollars in ppp loans that were definitely not used to just give money to the connected people.

It’s also super fair because when the average person was trolling the market with GameStop stock, they stopped letting the plebs trade because it was hurting their daddies.

That's fine until it starts affecting the economy directly. I guarantee in 6 months you'll have financial analysts on TV pondering the question why holiday sales are in a slump or why noones buying homes or why homelessness has increased.

Increase homelessness and financial disparity means more potential for crime which directly affects all of us.

Pelosi even said Biden has no power to pay off student debt. Only a act of Congress can do so. I don't see why people are surprised at this. We all knew this was the outcome.

Hats off to Biden, you bought votes without actually buying them. Its brilliant. Just like the Ukraine, not technically at war but Biden gets the laundry all the crypto he wants. Elite liberals are winning in a big way.

Conservatives need to take notes

Prediction, Democrats win the next presidential election but it won't be with Biden. Until Conservatives will go to the depths of hell to lie, steal and cheat. They have no power anymore. Pick up the slack please

10,000 in student loan forgiveness will fix all that? Just throw free money to people and fix everything.

I know. Not everybody gets to pass what they want. But that is the mechanism for spending.

Presidents don't just get to spend money on whatever they want. That's not how the system works.

If they want to do loan forgiveness, it is going to have to go through congress. Every time they try and back door it, it will get slapped down. A precedent for a president spending $400B without congress would result in every president spending money like a drunken sailor on every single thing that would get them votes.

Up to $20k for many of them and with the average amount owed on a loan being about $35k it would at least significantly lower the amount they had to pay per month. Now, they're not only going to have to pay that back but also retroactive interest which is a very VERY stupid move politically.

if the average amount is $35k instead of $25k and they went to college...figure it out.

Point is, there never seems to be any objection regarding sending money to Ukraine or Israel or increasing funding for the DoD but when it comes to giving money back to the people there's months and months of hemming-and-hawing and debate.

Was the plan all along to get "bailed out"? I don't understand this "it's going to kill the economy in 6 months" argument. It's not a surprise that you have to pay back a loan.

I'm also not a fan of corporate bail outs either. The biggest issue I have with it is you keep the same dummies running the company that got them in the position of needing a bail out.
You don't have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.

The world isn't perfect and people are asshats: shocker.

Biden promised something that wasn't within his gift and got told to fk off; it's that simple.

This isn't about the merits of loan forgiveness, this is about the legality of a president spending 400B without congressional approval.

There doesn't?

Strange because the very people that want me to pay for their student debt will call me a stooge of Putin because I don't want a penny sent to Ukraine. (or Israel for that matter)

Then skip college a few years. 18 yr olds can afford to skip a few years anyway. If a majority stop going, prices will lessen.
