It's not going around the Supreme Court ruling. This is a program that was already in place for years, but due to federal screwups these people didn't have their payments forgiven already years ago like they were supposed to. It's for people who have been paying at least 20 years AND are low income. It would mostly be people who dropped out of college in the 1980-90's but were still paying their loan either voluntarily or through their wages being garnished. This bailout for these specific people is literally just the feds cleaning up past fukups.

I’m largely against it but at least we’re bailing out everyday Americans for a change instead of ineptly ran corporations. Also if you have been consistently been paying for 20+ years, you shouldn’t be beholden to an interest rate scam for the rest of your life.

I'm pretty sure this has been in effect since Obama was in office. It also only applies to government loans, when majority of people with student debt have private loans to pay the majority of their tuition. (Super Ded fkn Srs)

Some people have their monthly Social Security garnished by the feds for student loans they took out 40 years ago. I imagine a decent amount of the loans forgiven were people retired or close to retirement. And like I said earlier, this is just the feds cleaning up their fukup, by now doing this when they were supposed to have done this over the course of many years for some low income people.

As many times as it takes until it gets done. This is Biden, not Trump (who immediately gave up every time the Dems told him to hit the bricks)

Great news. For whoever was in debt and had to work hard to pay it off it's definitely unfair but life is not fair. If you know the struggle be a nice human being and be glad less people have to go through it.

Also stfu with the government deficit nonsense. It's inconsequential to your life.

If they have been paying for 20 years with no end in sight and suffering because of it, why not ease their burden.

Some of it should come from their schools too. You taught them useless chit and took their money. You're on the hook.

Saving money/debt for everyone but yourself is supposed to piss me off? You're not entitled to anything.

Just pretend like this never happened.

It isn't illegal, it's a program that's been around for awhile. The feds simply should have been doing this for low income people who've been paying or having their wages garnished for 20+ years. Basically the feds clearing a backlog of some low income people they forgot about for many years. Of course the Biden Administration will take credit as if this is something new, when it's really just a show of how poorly run government is and people and programs are forgotten about until it's politically expedient.

Translation: this isn't new spending, but rather already congressionally legislated and authorised spending that they hadn't spent yet.

Probably shouldn't have enrolled in college if you didn't understand what you were doing

What an incredibly bigoted viewpoint.

We are brainwashing 17 year old kids to take on huge amounts of debt for a risky endeavor while lying to them that it's a safe investment. This is nothing like a 30 year old taking on debt for a real estate gamble. The only difference is one party can wash their hands clean through bankruptcy.

People enrolled in college right after HS. My dumbass wanted to be a Civil Engineer and it took me 7 years before I made the big decision to change majors. Was top 10% in HS. 18 is too young to confront college's learning curve accordingly. Had a dozen thousand in student loans.
