- How to escape consumerism
- Buy a big tv and internet, and watch unlimited series while rotting at home

Pick one.

Where in the South specifically? I doubt you can get a decent home in a decent neighborhood for $200,000.

a big tv is just how they come now...paid $180 for my 55 inch tv years ago. granted, I'd be perfectly happy watching tv on a old school tube tv like my parents and grandparents used to have.

I have 1000s of shows and movies free through the apps that came with the tv.

I have a friend who's wife just quit her job to take care of their kid and he makes about $60k/year and they are not living like kings....and I live in the south...in a pretty low cost of living area.

-$235k house bought in 2022....when she was working....Their max approval was $235k. just lol....and it's a "fixer upper" that hasnt been touched since 1987.
-$450/month car payment....bought when she was working and they both had to sign to get approved
-They're still paying down the debt from him financing her wedding ring 4 years ago, her boob job from 2 years ago and the loan they took out to go on vacation this year.

They constantly bail or don't agree to plans because they "dont have the money".........I honestly wonder on a weekly basis why we are still friends with them.

Why does a 1987 home need to be touched if everything works? Why did they need to finance a ring? Did she really need a boob job? Why didn't they pay cash for a car?

I can't fix stupid.

$10k for vacations? LOL. When I was growing up we went to the beach for 4-5 days as a vacation....nowadays that would cost $700-800 for the motel. Cell phone service can be had for $20/month...why would anyone not trapped by consumerism need the newest model phones, LOL.

But yes, that's pretty much living like king...everything you need covered, home owner, modern conveniences, etc.

What more do you want for below average income living?

Like I said -- living like a king...in America....on $60k.

Hence......I question weekly why we are still friends with them.

They make horrible financial decisions. The house sat empty for like 2 years and was a rental before that. It's in the same neighborhood that I live in, but is among the worst in the neighborhood. It just needs (notice I said needs because after being there for a year, they still have not fixed any of them!) things like a new roof, new windows, the pool liner is torn, pool is empty and the pump doesnt work, the AC is going....not to mention the cosmetic things like wood paneling, gross carpet (which they have ripped up and are just living on subfloor now), water damage on some drywall, oven from the 80's.....etc. I told him after they showed us the house "this thing needs $80k like right now" and he said "we'll fix it up over the next year or 2 and I'll do the work myself. Fukking hell.

He financed the ring because he's an idiot. He got her a $10k ring while he was making $40k/year.

She WANTED to get her boobs done....and sadly it was a reduction. She had disproportionally huge boobs (and apparently they were saggy) and is quite petite. Financed $5k and a weekend trip to Atlanta to get it done.....and to make matters worse, she got pregnant 7 months later and her teds are ruined again.

Also....cant buy a cash car when you ain't got no cash. He drives a 2010 Nissan Versa that was hers that's paid off....but he didn't want her driving it around anymore (and his 2000 Ford Escort blew up) so they bought her a Jeep Renegade.....that is now too small for them because the carseat doesn't even fit in the back seat and they have 2 dogs.

These people wouldnt raised right. First thing I'd say is why the hell are you buying a home with a pool. That's a money pit itself. And he sounds like a simp buying a woman a $10k ring on $40k income...right there is much of the needed home repairs.

Not sure how feasible it is in the US but in Europe you can easily just drive to various different countries for a good vacation. You don't need to fly halfway across the continent to have a good vacation.
