My cousin in law and his family were Jewish, and they didn’t believe in Hell. He was the worst narcissist I’ve ever met. Belief in Hell would’ve probably made him a better person.

Yes, obviously. Because most people aren't comfortable with accepting the idea that it's entirely possible that whatever life we get on this rock might really be it. The concept of ceasing to exist forever doesn't sit well with most folks.

however religion does provide more than that.


It fulfills our natural human desire to be immortal, and gives us the promise of seeing our loved ones again.

It is a source of comfort in the hardest of times for people’s lives.

I feel that aspect of religion is more attractive than the reward/punishment thing, but it is all designed to work together

I think it's the other way around. The promise of "heaven" or "eternal afterlife" is what makes people hold on to their faith. It's one of the reasons why Christianity and Islam won a lot of converts was because the indigenous populations' original religions had concepts of hell but their concept of heaven was not as good as what the monotheistic religions offered. For example, the Ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman religions basically said that if you did well in your life, then you would be rewarded to work in the fields for the Gods. Boring!

In contrast, it was harder to convert the Norse mythology believers because their afterlife was all about partying and fighting in the halls of Valhalla. Sounds great for men but lousy for women. That's why Nordic women were more easily convinced to accept Christianity and they heavily influenced their men to accept it as well. The Aztecs also had heaven and hell but to get into heaven and avoid hell, human sacrifices were needed and that cheesed off some of the local population.

I didn't say violence had no part in conversion; obviously, terror tactics were used but you can't rely on violence all the time. Missionaries coopted local faiths as well and/or tried to convince the indigenous population that their monotheistic faith had more to offer especially in the afterlife. Look at the early Christians of the Roman Empire. They were brutalized, tortured, executed, etc but they still hung on to their faiths because they believed that the reward of eternal life was worth the risk and that's how Christianity spread through the Roman empire, especially among the poor.

Yep, and for the most part - where that concept exists, if you end up there it's temporary.

Just like how in some Buddhism there's the 6 or 8 realms - one of them is a hell like one, but they are all temporary and part of Samsara (all of which is impermanent in their teachings).

Yes there are a lot of people who are religious without believing in eternal punishment after death.

One of the most disturbing things I ever discovered is how a lot of followers of the 3 Abrahamic religions, many Christians in particular, actually love the idea of hell, because not only does it make them feel special for being chosen by God to escape it, but also gives them a sick pleasure in fantasizing that anyone they don’t like will be cast into it forever.

The actual words used to translate into the word “hell” are predominantly “Sheol” (Aramaic) and it’s New Testament equivalent “Hades” (Greek), which both mean “grave”, with the occasional “Gehenna” (Valley of Hinnom, a garbage dump used in antiquity to burn refuse) and a single usage of “Tartarus” (Greek mythology).

The common notions of hell are derived from Greek mythology as well as other fictional and more modern depictions that have no basis in actual scripture.

The true doctrine of Christianity actually states that people die and are sent to the grave, where they stay with no thought or consciousness or works or being (dead) until the day of judgment on which everyone is purified in the lake of fire and are given new bodies and reside on the New Earth.

People don’t “go to Heaven”, there is no “Lucifer” (another mistranslation referring to the King of Babylon), and there is no “hell”, and the entire idea of Christ was that he actually died for everyone’s sins, and not only those who “believe” out of fear.


However, many Christians will recoil in utter horror upon learning that their King James Bible is grossly mistranslated and that their sick fantasy of hell has no basis in scripture. They cling desperately to the idea that they will literally get to point and laugh at the damned souls screaming in misery and agony in hell, as they chill with Jesus in “heaven” (srs)
