Son got his drivers license today! Life is short. Make memories! [vid]

So my son got his drivers license today! He has been driving on track since he was 14, but finally of age where he can drive on the street. This will also open up new opportunities for groups we can track with now that he has a drivers license.

When we got home, I asked him of he wanted to take the 720 out buy himself for his first time driving as a licensed driver. Didnt take him long to say yes. Just told him to be careful and dont do anything stupid. (car has almost 1000hp). But I trust him. He went to his buddies and then rolled back home.

A little crazy yes....but in the end all we have are memories. When I see a chance to make some, I will always do it. Life is short. I feel super lucky I can share stuff like this with my son.
Nice thing is I can hear him coming back home from quite a distance away

Ha! No. My McLaren. He has the S2000 you can see on the lift in the background, and that is also his track car you can see with the body panels off in the rear of the garage.

He has indeed driven the 720 quite a bit. (with me as passenger while he had his permit). I just thought I would make a fun memory for him when we got home. I have no worries of his driving. He is a better (technical) driver than I am. He has been driving on track since he was 14. Just before our summer break, he shifted to where he is faster around the track than I am. He beat me by 3/10...and that gap will only grow. Fun to watch your kids do better than you can!

I can't imagine how proud OP must feel seeing a son he has a great bond with who was obviously raised well drive off in an awesome car knowing he'll feel like the coolest kid alive. Goals for sure. I just hope he'll be careful- I know I would have stretched those legs of that car if I was him.

Thanks for the guys that 'get it'. As a dad, I just will say that watching your kids hit movements and milestones brings a joy that is hard to describe. He is my youngest, so the last our 'little'. All these moments will be the last time I get to experience them. Having not grown up with a lot, I feel very lucky to be able to share stuff like this with my son. The even cooler part, is he loves it all for the 'right' reasons. He does not care about 'flexing'.....he just wants to drive and drive fast.

The track is an awesome experience because it is the first thing where we both came to it new and were learning at the same time. Him at 14 and me at 48. Not many things like that with kids. Most time time as a parent, you spend time watching your kids do things. But this is something we do together, and grow together.

I have some really cool news. In just over a week we are headed out to Vegas. We are buying our first actual race car. Not a track car someone built, but a factory built car made to compete in cup series. One of 34 brought to the US with multiple podium wins. I never would have ever imagined we would be at this point. But I figure I have 2 more years with him still at home and we are going to make the best out of them before his life gets busy like it does for all of us between 18 and 25.

So massive road trip, in double decker enclosed hauler of my buddies who offered to go. 34 hours each way. I could not just have it shipped since it is a full race set up and not just a car. Full extra set of carbon fiber body panels, extra motor, extra trans, 6 wheel sets and on and on with spares. I could not trust someone to pack it properly so we are going to make the drive and bring it back. SUPER exited.

Dont want to say just yet what it is. I dont want to jinx it, but for me, it is a very special car and I feel honored to be able to be the new owner. But hopefully for the fall we will be running 2 cars. I am having a custom 2 car trailer built right now which should be ready for fall, and hopefully we can finish the build on his and have both cars ready to run together!

It is all in how you raise your kids. We live relatively simple lives. Our kids know our values. I put almost zero value on material things. That is different than owing something that just happens to be expensive. I buy things because I like them, not because I care how much they cost or what others think.

I have shown my kids how NOT to be defined by external things. I have owned a few lambos and several other exotics, and I dont own a single t-shirt or hat with logos on them. I dont flex and I dont like to be defined by external things. I own no name brand clothing and wont wear anything with a label. I dont want things to define me. I define myself. My kids have always seen this.

I might have some nice stuff, but I also have stuff that I greatly appreciate that does not cost a lot of money. I bought a Kia Sorrento and it is the favorite SUV I have ever had. I have had plenty of luxury stuff, but Kia I just love. We bought my wife a model X and she asked if we needed the keep the Kia and I just cant sell it. I like it too much. I also have a 2006 Nissan pickup that I bought new and will never sell. I love it. Things dont have to be expensive to be something I like.

Being self employed since 23, I have always demonstrated to my kids the importance of self reliance. I do everything myself. I am not too good for hard work. When the yard needs mulch, I go buy 3 pallets of mulch and we all do yard work as a family. I am not too good to cut my own lawn or wash my cars. I enjoy doing hard work. Any success in life has been because I was never afraid to work hard.

Even today, in our rental properties, I unclog toilets or go fix items if necessary. I dont consider myself too good for anything. My kids have seen this and grown up like this and neither my son nor my daughter put value in external things either. It is wonderful to see your kid become people you are proud of. It is also great to see your kids not care about 'stuff'.

To be honest, I was not wired that way. Growing up without much, I used to think 'stuff' was important. I'd like to think we have shown our kids what should be the focus of life and where you put your energies. On the flip side, if you work hard, nothing wrong with enjoying the fruits of your labor.

Take away all this stuff....I would still have just as much fun. The toys would be different. Perhaps a wrecked 10k Miata, Hell, maybe even something cheaper to bond over like fishing. The stuff is not the point. It is the moments you get to make.

Was gonna say, I would be shocked if any insurance company would even insure your son with a mclaren.

It's not a good idea to give a 16 year a car as powerful as that. As much as you think you trust him ...he's going to peer pressured to drive fast and probably will out of curiosity alone
