Can someone please explain the statistics / concepts behind how the Democrat and Republican parties are basically equal size? I would be surprised if it turned out that people would just naturally split 50/50 based on there only being two main choices, somehow... For example in real life most people prefer coke to pepsi and they're the two major cola sodas, it's not a 50/50 split.

I would expect that maybe one of the parties has 70% of voting public and the other has 30%. I always thought 50/50 meant like a meaningless even spread.

As you showed OP, the biggest group is Independents, who are how surprising elections happen. In a country with a duopoly system I'm not surprised it's rather split evenly. There are things that keep in that way like taxes and mass media, which pits people against one party or the other. If we weren't a predominantly middle class country it wouldn't be an even split.

It's a very wide range of income so it's going to have less extremes. And it's enough to be comfortable so that most middle class people don't pay much attention to politics, so they can also be heavily persuaded by things they hear from people who are into politics. The momentum in their environment already (most of their time around other middle class people) keeps things in balance. Many social issues end up being the dividing line and Americans are pretty evenly divided on many of the wedge issues, so middle class people are less motivated by the things that motivate the poor and rich.
