Bill to make extreme heat a national emergency

https://www.politico.com/news/2023/0...gress-00106692

"national emergency" declarations gives the feds certain powers. For instance, FEMA could send money to affected states faster if there is a national emergency declaration.

Currently, "national emergencies" are limited to sudden, unforeseen, unpredictable disasters, like tornadoes and floods. Heat is something that happens every summer, same time and same place. So you wonder if you really need a "state of emergency" declaration, or should states simply spend the spring, fall, and winter to prepare for extreme heat?

Exactly.

Pretty soon it’ll only require one pot hole in a 500 mile stretch of road to declare a state of emergency.

Why is it that liberals think the government is the answer to every single problem people could ever face?

Government is usually the reason for most people's problems existing lol.

Not sure why overcooked red states should be given federal FEMA dollars when their representatives vote against every climate change bill regardless.
The legislation would authorize $30 million each year through fiscal 2030. At least 75 percent of the money would go to low-income and disadvantaged communities. No Republican has signed on.
Of course if the rich don't get the money or massive tax breaks then Republicans want nothing to do with it.

Places in Arizona and Texas that are normally 98-105 degrees this time of year being 110-115 degrees in not a national emergency. If their governors want to declare a state of emergency for a few weeks that's fine. More is not needed.

The over 3 million illegal aliens now entering the US per year ARE a national emergency as they spread throughout the entire country.

The OP's premise, and the need for new legislation, are both retarded.

If it got hot enough that significant numbers of people were dying or in danger then a state of emergency could be declared under existing law.

Also, desert life is GOAT.

Except they're not hypocrites because they voted for bills to help actual Americans. Fuking idiot.

Perhaps they think it’s a little too vague. I quickly looked at the bill so I may have missed it but I did not see an actual definition of extreme heat. I’m not really a fan of any bill that doesn’t completely define a main point of the bill. And it looks like a republican helped author the bill.

President Roosevelt called and wants the rights to the heat wave back. He thinks it's still 1936.

Wholeheartedly agreed. North America has entire swathes of "fukk you" territory that people decided to inhabit despite all reason, and thegeography itselflends tothe most extreme weather.

Just because peoplecanlive in the most uninhabitable places devoid of natural resources conducive to human living doesn't mean that theyshould, and it was only a matter of time before nature won out over people who chose the bloodydesertto call home.

Obligatory (to the government):

But seriously, what exactly is the government going to do that turning on the AC won't accomplish?

Better idea: restrict how much electric companies can charge during this supposed "extreme heat" and force lower rates, and apply the same for water rates. If it's bad enough to be declared a national emergency, then it should be severe enough to warrant preventing companies from exploiting the situation for profit. However, that would be the government trying tosavepeople money from the very people whobribebribe"lobby" them to keep the companies profitable.
