Unpopular Opinion: Mafia movies are corny as hell. Can't even take them seriously.
The whole Italian mobster stereotype had been parodied into the ground long before I was even born, fellas. Never in my life did I ever find mafia movies to be anything other than corny & tacky attempts at mainstream entertainment. And yes, that holds true for your belove-ed Godfather movies. Can't say anything bad about them, right? Oooohhhhh, not allowed to do that."The Godfather is the best movie ever made! Its a sin to say otherwise!"Yeah, its like saying the Beatles wouldn't have been nearly as popular without their stupid haircuts and crumpet-eating accents.....which is true. Not supposed to say it tough.
Understand, I don't think the Godfather movies are terrible, I just couldn't get into them. Did nothing for me. Didn't budge my needle at all. Mafia movies never do. Never even cared to watch the third one. The whole thing is so played out. The Italian Mafia. Yeah, okay. We get it. Its all just parody to me.

There are two kinds of mafia films:
1) fictional characters like The Godfather, none of it based on reality
2) real life mafia guys like Bugsy Siegel and Lucky Luciano who were historical figures
Watch “Mobsters” starring Christian Slater and learn the real history of organized crime in New York during prohibition. Most of what you see in that film is based on the last testament of Lucky Luciano, an autobiography published ten years after his death.

I agree that American Mafia movies are way too high test for you, OP. You should stick to Barbie and Disney movies.
The Italian Mafia, like it ot not, is actually an important part of American history. No other criminal organization has ever aquired that level of power or influence in the most powerful country on planet Earth. All that from a bunch of hoodlums raised in the 5 boroughs of NYC.
They're a bunch of scum bags, but they were at the most elite level of crime in their day. And like all other powerful organizations, there is a lot that a soy boy like you could learn.
Now go home and get your fukin shinebox!

For a realistic portrayal of the 80’s-90’s you should check out HBO’s “Gotti” (not the one with Travolta)
It’s on youtube in decent quality. According to ex made-guys this comes closest to the real thing in terms of social dynamics, interactions etc. And the guy playing Gotti is said to be spot-on.
Also, for the prohibition & forming of the Commission era you should check out “Boardwalk Empire” .. it’s fiction and non-fiction combined with alot of names you might recognize :
Lansky, Luciano, Siegel, Maranzano, Torio, Capone, O’Bannion and a chitload more.
Edit : Arnold Rothstein

So first off, the mafia movies are for a different generation than (most) of us these days. Not only that, its also pretty narrow geographically speaking. But it captured the imagination of a lot of people.
Secondly, I do agree about some movies getting this ridiculous cult status turbo hype, which I think is a result of the same sort of phenomenon thats behind a lot of other trends in society. Basically, certain films gets this "mark of approval" by self proclaimed film snobs, and normies feel pressured into hyping the movie to "fit in", since they don't want to defend a diverging opinion - especially if they perceive the people they're talking to as being of higher social status at least within the realm of films.
The most disgustingly blatant showing of this is old movies on imdb. You can probably subtract an entire point of a movies imdb score if its made pre 1980s. Obviously there are some old movies that are legitimately very good, but on average the scores are inflated by a lot. Why? Well because its perceived as "cool" to appreciate "underground" and "non mainstream" stuff like old movies. Its why the hipster movement was a thing. Its why some of us took pride in knowing a high number of non mainstream musicians when we were teenagers.
I think what annoys me the most is when you take an average or even good movie (good example being Pulp Fiction) and just overhype it into infinity, to the point where I just hate the product because people can't stop talking about how insanely good it is when in reality it really is nothing special. Like at least admit its just your own personal opinion, nomsayin? I really, really like David Lynch's Mulholland Dr. and Lost Highway. But I realize those movies aren't for everyone, and I wouldn't go shoving it down peoples throats as the greatest films ever made.
