I don't think pay in Poland is bad relative to cost of living, but yeah, it's an ex-communist state so it's lower.

The standard of living is identical at this point to Western Europe. In many ways its better because they've been built up more recently, more things are newer. Warsaw had some of the nicest public transportation I've seen anywhere.

Ironically communism saved some of those countries from the degeneracy of the west, as those governments tended to do the opposite of what the west was doing, at least that was the case in Poland. Time will tell if they can continue to maintain that, or if they'll become just as morally bankrupt as their non ex-communist neighbors.

I've spent a lot of time in Poland in particular, and if I had to move to Europe that's probably where I'd go, even if I had to find a job over there.

I know someone who worked in banking in Gdansk and she was still getting paid the equivalent of £400 per month in 2015. She had to travel around the city to cover staff at retail banks too for no extra pay
