Dude I talk to at work literally just said the economy was good under Trump because

I'll state for the record I'm not a fan of the bailouts, handouts, and all the money printed under Trump during covid. At the same time, the Trump economy was pretty good up until that point and I realize it's not exactly a ringing endorsement, but I'm fairly confident if a democrat had been president the covid response would have been far worse.

We're technically still recovering from the Great Recession. It will be another decade until we fully recover.

But regardless, there is a lag effect for economic policy. An economy doesn't suddenly become great day 1 of a presidency.

I think it would have been a lot the same, just bigger. Every version of the stimulus bills Trump signed, the Democrats wanted more.

In fairness, though, I think Trump said he wanted more, too, lol. The Democrats will say the extra money they wanted would have helped the middle class, but I'm skeptical. The lockdowns really hurt the economy, too, and Trump at least let states decide how to approach those. I think under a Democrat the lockdowns would have been stricter and longer, maybe pushed under threat of withholding federal money from states that didn't comply.
