Are any of you Perfectionists at Work?

I'm a high achiever at work and I literally have given myself the worst anxiety over the fear of mistakes.

I proofread quickly and I've been doing my job for many years so a lot of tasks I can do repetitive and quickly, but if I make a mistake I feel horrific shame like I'm a bad person. Lately I've been covering 3 jobs so the volume of emails makes it easy to miss an email.

When I stayed home with my daughter I didn't have this level of anxiety because I didn't have that constant pressure and fear of criticism.

Plus I work in tech where I literally interact with hundreds of emails and instant messages in an hour where people say "Dusty I need this, Dusty I need that" so it can be beyond overwhelming. I was a top student in college as well but I was miserable studying for As.

Do any of you have coping skills? My therapist says it's OK to make mistakes but I have this horrible fear they'll escalate to my manager. Or should I move into a less stressful field?

One of my biggest regrets in life is putting in 1000% effort for Mr. Shekelstein, stressing and making sure every single detail was perfect lol. I could have just half assed it, played politics, and had more success.

I'm similar. I overthink and try to get details correct; meanwhile people who are sloppy and play politics get levels ahead.

But I don't regret it, I hate playing politics and don't want to sell my integrity. But I would like to think less.

I agree because I see some of these people who donโ€™t even reply to their emails and get bonuses because they can talk a good talk at meetings and socialize. Meanwhile youโ€™ll always see me typing away at my desk and rarely socializing.

Damn thatโ€™s a lot of pressure.

I was also thinking that air traffic controllers, doctors and nurses have very stressful jobs as if they make a mistake someone could die.

Some people are insanely good at talking. They can magnify impact and take credit for stuff effortlessly. It's a skill for sure. I'm not a good salesman, and I can't stand the fakeness.

I think everyone sees through the facade, but it doesn't matter because they're ticking the necessary boxes up the chain. It just becomes a giant corporate game once a business is established enough.

With every mistake, I become closer to perfection.

I realized that I don't have to be perfect.

What I will say though - I often try to get chit done in order to have less to worry about/stuff for people to potentially pester me about (in my job there is no such thing as ever being "caught up" not even close) which unfortunately...then just leads to my supervisor transferring me more stuff since I'm the one getting the most done on my team so...I can never make any real progress in that regard.

I am when there's time/budget for it but have done too many projects where you're stretched thin and can only do everything to like 80% at best before needing to move on

And since I bill by the hour and am not an employee, I'm only doing what they want to pay for

For me it's a lot of Daddy issues. My Dad pushed me to be an A student so I could get into a good grad school, to play D1 tennis since he only played D2, and I used to constantly seek validation from men because of it.

I have noticed this. I've seen people talk their way into jobs during interviews and then I think it's too hard to fire them so they get promoted. Just lol.

I know people say we learn from our mistakes. I learned from mistakes I made in my 20s and I'm wiser now because of that.

Oh gosh I know those feels. You see some people on their phone all day while you're crunching away and then they just give you moar work. I don't see this so much in my current position but I've seen it in the past.

That's exciting about opening your own business!

I had a side business and it didn't even feel like a job as I was excited to work with clients and help them answer their questions about makeup and skin care instead of networks.

I bill by the hour as well as a consultant. There are some things I can leave behind while doing 3 jobs such as documentation, but I give it my all as the economy is rough now and my friends became my manager and my manager's manager in a reorg so I also feel like I don't want to slack for them.

Lmao that's a hard lesson I learned at my last job.

It's amazing the boomers and some Gen Xs whine about nobody having strong work ethic anymore but they never want to reward hard workers with things like extra pay. Instead you get Employee of the Month and you get a shirt with the company logo

As long as they're paying your invoices for it!

If they want something done and it'll take 20 hours but they want to keep it to 15, I've learned to be okay with putting out imperfect work to suit

I think I just have made myself sick over it and I take a lot of anti-anxiety medication that I didn't take when I was a stay-at-home Mom. There wasn't the same pressure in that role.

It's so much easier to stay home with kids. Women will complain about it but they have it easy. Of course I just had one so that's easier than multiple kids.

Perhaps that has helped with your mental health.

No. For a number of good reasons but primarily:

1) diminishing marginal returns to me. Going above 80% produces no tangible reward for me
2) it is both easier, and appears more productive, to deliver a large number of products at 80% compared to fewer projects at 100%
3) senior management/clients prefer to be able to provide โ€œinputโ€ - psychologically they feel theyโ€™ve had a value-add - if you leave room for their improvements or even just to cater to their preferences
4) at my level of seniority there are very few individuals capable of distinguishing between 80 pc and 100 pc and I know them by name.
