Shortest IQ Test

A researcher at MIT created this IQ test. If you get all three correct, you are among the top 17% of the smartest in the world. 33% of people got all three wrong. Most people get at least one wrong. My wife, who is literally a genius, got them all immediately. It was shocking how fast she was. Took me a min on the first two, and about two on the third one because I misread it. Read them CAREFULLY. This isn’t a contest, so it would be more fun if no one posted the answers and just let everyone try it out first. Feel free to look up the answers to see if you got them right.

It was fun to take this because I took an IQ test many years ago and it took several hours. This shortened version doesn’t give you a number, but it is a good indication if you’re at least “above average”.
A bat and a ball cost $1.10 total. The bat costs $1 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?

If it takes 5 machines 5 mins to make 5 widgets, how long does it take 100 machines to make 100 widgets?

There is a patch of Lilly pads in a lake that doubles in size every day. If it takes 48 days to cover the entire lake, how long does it take to cover half of the lake?

I've heard the first one before. It's a somewhat famous riddle.

The second one took me a while. The repetition of the same number makes you want to say "100" without thinking about it, but the answer isn't 100.

Yeah. I think these questions were designed to do that, which is why it took me a moment as well.

This is why I was shocked that my wife got them so fast, even though I already knew she was a genius. I just didn’t realize her brain could work that fast, even with “confusing” information. It def made me realize how on point these tests are for IQ, not just getting them right, but how fast your brain can process the information too. Now I understand why IQ tests are timed.

If a bat and a ball cost $1.10 total and the bat costs $1 more than the ball then the ball is 10c. Fuk all this 5c chit man. It says "a bat and a ball" aka "a bat + a ball".

It says on some website "If the ball were to cost ten cents then both together would cost $1.20" why, when it literally says they cost $1.10 together. Fuk this stuff!

A bat and a ball cost $1.10 total - right so they cost $1.10 total. For 5c to be right it would have to say: "A bat and a ball cost $1.05 total".

From a UK site: "If the ball costs 10p, then the total cost will be £1.20 (10p for the ball and £1.10 for the bat)" but that's obviously wrong when it told you the total at the fukkin' start of it! The total is $1.10 so the ball is 0.10 and the bat is 1.00. Is this supposed to be a joke?

What if it totals $1.05, does the ball cost nothing? This is lunacy.

Yeah, the answers are always simple. The questions are designed in a way that forces higher levels of abstraction to solve, like a riddle, or sometimes the brain tricks us by recognizing something and giving the wrong answer as a result. For instance, on the first question the first answer that came to mind was .10, but I knew that wasn't right because the "proof" didn't add up, so I worked backwards in my head from that proof to get the right answer, if that makes sense

The bat costs $1 MORE. The ball is .05, and $1 more than .05 would be 1.05. 1+.05 = 1.05. More means add them. Does that make sense?
