Who would you consider the first mid-carder to be a Heavyweight Champion?

The Dark Side of the Ring Bash at the Beach episode got me thinking it was Booker T, but I think there may have been a few before him who were mid-carder.

Would you consider these guys mid-card champions before Booker T?

Pedro Morales
Sgt. Slaughter
Bret Hart

Ever since that Bash at the Beach in 2000, it felt like all the mid- carders had a shot at being a champion and would no longer feel held down by real main eventers. My definition between main eventer and mid-carder? Mid-Carders can't draw.

He was supposed to win the title from Double J? Double J was a midcard act in the '90s.

I think Bret's struggles early on were definitely about overcoming the midcard/tag team thing. And for good reason. It took me several years to see Edge as a main event guy.

slaughter was huge when he left wwe and when he came back, he was almost immediately the heel with the most heat by far. can't really call him midcard.

dont know enough about pedro morales, but didnt he sell out the garden a few times?

iron sheik was def a midcard champ. how many other main events did he wrestle in? stan stasiak?

Nah the opposite. Slaughter was a more of main eventer before he left. He was main evening with Iron Sheik. Iron Sheik was a main-eventer because he made all these guys like Slaughter, Backlund, Hogan main eventers.

When Slaughter came back, he was a cheesy heel who got cheap heat for siding with Sadam Hussein during the Gulf War. No longer a true main eventer like when he battled with the Sheik.
