Manganese + Neurodivergence
Came across this looooooonng answer on Quora last night. Starts out being about the relationship between ADHD and the INTP MBTI type.

^^^
When they took the lead out of gasoline they started putting manganese in.

This isn't to say that mate selection and older mothers aren't an ongoing factor, but still...crazy if true. The irony if lead was removed partly because of negative effects on cognition and what we used instead could also be creating cognition changes.

Is there a correlation between INTP and ADHD/ADD?
It turns out there are a few genetic “biochemical regulation” differences that can predispose us to becoming an MBTI intuitive, particularly INTP type, and also for becoming diagnosable with AD(H)D. These mostly involve biochemical levels and regulation during neurodevelopmental years.
...neurotypical [people] generally think with the left side of their brain. This part of the brain is strong in sequential logic and runs like a flowchart. Neurotypical people consider situations, make decisions, and interact socially all using this sequential logic.
Unlike the left side, the right side of people’s brains is wired more for “holistic data processing”. The right side is good for abstract reasoning, visual processing, emotion processing etc. You could say the right side of the brain is analogous to a massive array of simple processors. In contrast, the left brain is a single, extremely powerful processor. In computer terms, the left brain is a CPU and right brain is a GPU.
...genetically elevated manganese levels can promote development of an unusually strong right side of the brain. This effectively makes a person’s abstract reasoning skill stronger. But… an unusually strong abstract reasoning skill is one of the hallmarks of what makes someone an INTP.
...the abstract reasoning part of our brain may become dominant. Instead of thinking sequentially and simply, we can think in many directions at once all the time. This can make complex things simple and simple things complex. There are often many, many little thoughts floating around in their heads!
But then it becomes a primer on optimum manganese levels and he has a fascinating hypothesis. It turns out there are a few genetic “biochemical regulation” differences that can predispose us to becoming an MBTI intuitive, particularly INTP type, and also for becoming diagnosable with AD(H)D. The typical average blood manganese level was roughly 6 mcg/L. Now levels are higher.
Peak Full-Scale IQ scores is associated with 9 mcg/L blood manganese. Peak performance IQ (a smaller collection of IQ subtests) peaked at around 10 mcg/L. Some subtests peaked at even higher levels of manganese, such as pattern matching tests.
Autism risk starts at around 12 mcg/L. People with Autism Spectrum Disorder usually have a high skew among IQ test subtests, with their highest subtest score in pattern-matching. Their pattern matching scores are usually higher than for the neurotypical population. Thus, autistic people are not dumb. They may just be exceptionally right-brain dominant. Teaching the right brain can be hard because it requires experience to fill a vast vat of knowledge before simple things become simple.
Not shown on the chart: Boys have higher average manganese levels than girls, and this may account for the higher incidence of ADHD and ASD.

Not even gonna touch, Meyer Briggs might as well be phrenology or astrology.
The manganese thing is interesting tho. I don't have a fukking clue about biology or genetics, but the first question in my mind: is there any sort of mutation that can cause this, either by absorbing more or excreting less?

A lot of it is bound to glycoproteins.

Study:
https://www.frontiersin.org/articles...018.00664/full
Also mentions in the text that men trend higher than women and Asian higher than other races, so that implies some type of genetic mechanism. Maybe men absorb more than women because having only one copy of some genes makes them more vulnerable to extremes in intelligence? Maybe Asian people developed higher absorption of manganese because in their geographical area there is less naturally available in the environment?

Could be that at some concentration level manganese is influencing the pruning process of brain maturation and some people are maintaining more connections and operating more from their right brain because of higher manganese levels in the environement.
